I am much the same with Mann - I just read it out of a feeling I should try. Saying that my partner is no fool and he loves Death in Venice - must be some value in it somewhere.

The ginger thing in DiV is pretty simple - all the wicked characters have red hair, perhaps Silenus?. Dull metaphor and overplayed straight away.

I read DiV when it was first published even, encouraging Luchino Visconti to make his cinematic triumph, Death in Venice... apart from his Ossessione my favourite Visconti work...of art...

Hardly hatred of ginger haired people...more a recognition of their passionate obsessiveness with the focus of their passion..

Here's a clip of Visconti's, Ossessione (1943) much appreciated by Benito Mussolini despite being banned by the Italian censor...until Fascism collapsed...a few months later..:
