A floating ‘hover ship’ was recently photographed off the coast of Falmouth, Cornwall and it has been referenced as a fantastic example of a ‘superior mirage‘. According to BBC meteorologist David Braine:

The “superior mirage” occurred because of special atmospheric conditions that bend light. The illusion is common in the Arctic, but can appear “very rarely” in the UK during winter. Superior mirages occur because of the weather condition known as a temperature inversion, where cold air lies close to the sea with warmer air above it.

Since cold air is denser than warm air, it bends light towards the eyes of someone standing on the ground or on the coast, changing how a distant object appears. Superior mirages can produce a few different types of images – here a distant ship appears to float high above its actual position, but sometimes an object below the horizon can become visible.

This sort of thing can be a combination effect: under the right conditions, the horizon can appear to be lower than it really is. I've seen that happen, but could only tell because I knew where the horizon should have appeared from where I was. Since the horizon looked low, the freighter and barge that were actually just at the horizon seemed to be in the air. Another time I could see a barge that was actually beyind the horizon.

And sometimes you get both the item and the mirage!

Actually this is a triple: you can see the actual ship, then a mirror image above it, and finally an upright image -- multiple mirages.

No matter the era, it's terrible to see women so fugly and unshapely wearing such sophisticated fashions... one gets where male chauvinism digged its point... and that must be the reason why the same bourgeois version of old male chauvinism refused to follow the same ways with male fashion, as had been the old costume, and ruled that male fugliness should be effaced under stern fashions: by the way, the first two women walking towards the left of the camera at the beginning of the video are by far the most stylish in the whole picture... surely considered some sort of modern wacky "Sapphos" by the most of the people in their times, especially all the frilled-up females, (that is a woman in male clothes walking to their right, isn't it?) and one gets a visual of the clothes Dior had in mind when he bet to revive the women of his childhood memories.

^ here’s an example of lights. Car lights can also be reflected this way so they move sometimes in odd directions as the car goes around curves and such
