Post something just for the heck of it

Your reference to E. M. Forster triggers a delightful memory of "Maurice" brought to the silver screen through the genius of Ismail Merchant and James Ivory. I suspect that Forster was much more representative of the repressed English "queer" of the Edwardian era when his observation might well be considered accurate...today...the English, and the British in general are much more liberated...from my practical experience bedding many...

Not all of the essay stands the test of time, but we are certainly still fairly stuck in the mindset he describes. In certain areas we are more liberal - but watch the squirm of an Englishmen when sex or money is discussed publicly! Also note the humour we still get out of the idea of all Southern Europeans being constantly close to hysteria, the strange racist caricatures of a French men who cannot control his lust.

I think that Forster recognized that all Englishmen are a little queer.

Here in Greece we have the opposite view for it is the British who we consider ultra liberated especially, the young who spend their time on the Greek islands drinking like fish, and fucking like rabbits....I appreciate that ones perspective depends upon ones experience but the British on holiday in the Mediterranean have a well established reputation losing their natural reserve.

It always feels like that is a performance and is tolerated. Drink a lot and perhaps life can be how it should be - we can be open, loving, free. In reality all the drink and fucking is just another lack of emotion - no one sees any beauty in the one night stand - the most that can come from it is "fuuuh she's/he's fucking hot", "I shagged her so hard the other night! Waaaaaayyyy". There is no emotion in any of it, just playing the role we are told to play when young and on holiday.

I've no regrets for my years of excess for they taught me that today is the beginning, and end of my life...gather rosebuds while ye may, and if one survives....one prospers from the learning lessons especially, the sore heads, the morning after..and the lost loves whose faces are etched in our memories forever of what could have been....Shelley probably had a more skilful hand when writing of short romantic encounters that encouraged us to break out of our self imposed solitude...

All Western European people are "ultra liberated" in Southern Europe, particularly in the Greek Islands, Ibiza and the Spanish Mediterranean coast.

Why it is always assumed that there are rosebuds to gather, and never thistles and lichens...

Without a thorn to bloody my hands the effort would never be worth my while for, the rose is only worth plucking when I have sacrificed something of my self to realize my dream come true....

And yet the majestic caribou incorporates lichen into its diet and has the sense to find it not one whit less satisfying even with the absence of thorns and bloodshed. Perhaps even because of it!

Bof..!....

^ I wonder if that is a real monument in the USA? (granite, Art Deco, gold stars)

I think I read somewhere, time ago, that it represents a studio replica of a monument that existed back then in NYC's Central Park, now dismantled.
