I particularly liked the Lot No. 241 - by Jacob van der Ulft (whoever he is)

A comparative bargain at 'only' 15,000 euros!

I really like Thomas Heeremans!

They got better as they approached the second quarter of the XVIIth century, when the real XVIIth century started, didn't they?

Judging by those compositions you posted, Heeremans looks more Dutch, and more in the old-fashioned XVIth century style in which landscape is still treated more like a stage set for teeming human figures than as an excuse to explore the possibilities of study of light, which is the true hallmark of Golden Age Dutch masters, be it in outdoor compositions or in indoor sets.

Van der Ulft, on the contrary, is more continental, "poussinian", and his strokes are softer, he is more academic, in the vein of Lorrain or Schönfeld, but they also have a more vibrant understanding of light and color... Heeremans reminds me too much of what I do not like in true classic masters like Hobbema, while those other to are more definitely classic European painters, beyond adscription to schools.

Not really that keen on Schonfeld, but I DO certainly like Claude Lorrain! Especially the 'harbour' and 'port' depictions where the ships and the buildings come together. I find them quite evocative.

He is lost somewhere in the land of Maria von Trapp, near Vienna.

Schoenefeld is a second-rate artist, that nobody knows, while Lorrain is first-rate classical painting... although I always assume that the "evocative" qualities of his work are likely to be put on a pair with those of, say, a Dalí by the uncouth, guileless mass... like the can be by the authoritative penny-critics.
