I wondered about that too. How does a person "officially" become transgender? I imagine there must be some sort of process which leads to formal recognition, but I wouldn't be entirely surprised if we're expected these days to accept a person's transgender status purely on their own say so.

In the UK, it seems to be that for M to F trans you simply declare yourself to be a 'woman', and then you are, even if you have a cock, balls, beard, hairy chest, and XY chromosomes (but no womb, no ovaries, no breasts, or XX chromosomes). Then you can free access female-only (previously) safe-spaces.

As for F to M trans, no one really cares.
