If you read what I said there was no personal information. It was all information that anyone including myself and you or anyone with an internet connection could get. I gave the public web sites that the information came from. It is the official web site of the school which lists the address of the school, the school's phone number, principals name and the name of the school board members. There is no personal information. It is all public information that the school has put in a public form.

I grew up near Memphis and none of this really surprises me, considering the innate conservatism of the South and the tendency to homophobia in the African-American community.

I have a sister and brother in law that teach at a private Catholic school. I mentioned this story to them and both were appalled.

This person has chosen a profession that's supposed to nurture and develop young minds. How could anyone who chooses this as a career think anything positive will come of this is beyond my way of thinking.

It's really sad that some who enter this field bring their personal feelings with them and attempt to inflict them on the students who are still in the developing stages of their lives.

A teenager's life is so monumental! Most of what takes place has a huge effect on how they deal with the rest of their life. How could this person even fathom that what she was doing would have anything beneficial is just fucking crazy!

No, the second statement should sink her. The fact that she didn't call all the parents, just those of two gay guys, makes it pretty obvious that she wasn't interested in monitoring anyone at all -- she just wanted a cover for persecuting homosexuals. She even said so: "... went on to say that she didn't like gay people and wouldn't tolerate homosexuality at her school." She very plainly set out to violate the right of privacy and the right of freedom of association of a particular 'class' of student because of her personal malice.
Even her original statement is grounds for firing: she openly announced her intention to violate the right of freedom of expression of all students who were part of couples: public displays of affection are a matter of personal expression, not to be restricted except with a clear educational purpose (i.e., if they disrupt the learning environment). It's been established over and over that hugs, holding hands, even quick kisses, outside the classroom, are not disruptive of the educational environment (I'd argue that they enhance it, by teaching that showing affection for others is a matter of individual liberty).
IIRC from my student teaching days, treating anyone differently due to sexual orientation is no different than treating someone differently because of religion or race. Imagine a principal declaring she didn't like Baptists and wouldn't tolerate such religion at her school, or that she didn't like Orientals and wouldn't tolerate them at her school, or that she didn't like blond people and wouldn't tolerate them at her school! This is the same thing; all she did was to set up a smokescreen for her bigotry... even while announcing her bigotry.

If they were being discreet about it, and that was their preference, the principal should have honored that, as they were basically honoring her logic. And I definitely agree that the couples shouldn't have been monitored just for PDA purposes; that's definitely too Victorian...

Strictly as a side note: If it does go to court, the ACLU is definitely taking the right tac on it. If they had tried to press a discrimination issue, it would have been slammed rather easily (the principal was keeping an eye on both hetero and homo couples). Of course, I think that the principal could get nailed for slander for saying it repeatedly...

It's violation of the right of privacy, of the right of freedom of association, of the right of freedom of expression -- yet it's also a violation of their right not to be persecuted on the basis of all those items enumerated in the federal educational regulations to which all schools getting any federal funds are subject. Yes, she said she was keeping an eye on both hetero and homo couples, but unless she called hetero couples' parents and said she didn't approve of heterosexuality and wouldn't tolerate it in "her" school, it's a hollow statement.
