  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Problems like racism, homophobia and etc will not stop until enough people let go of that way of thinking.

Racism will continue to run rampant until people stop searching for every opportunity to cry racism at everything to get their own way and for their 15 minutes of fame on social media.

Actually, it is more-so the opposite. People who constantly cry that something isn't a "race" issue. People believe that just because it isn't completely blatant and in your face, it isn't there. And of course I realize there are people that cry wolf a lot, but my point stands.

What the thread title is saying to me is that racism, homophobia etc will not stop until people stop being racist, homophobic etc. Surely that's blindingly obvious.

Pretty much this.

Or more to the point, those things won't stop until they cease to be successful, hence legal reforms. They have historically been "problems" for the victims.

It won't happen any time soon.
People love to look down on others, it make them feel better about themselves.
School bullying, homophobia, xenophobia, racism, it's all a cover for our own insecurities.
That's the human nature.

^ good point .

I get what you are saying.....

What I do is try to be the solution I wish other people would adopt.

I have no power to change anyone else except for myself...so a good example is the best I can do in the end.

You should see the guys I hang around now. Let's just say no one would expect any of them to be gay friendly...they look "scary" ...but they ARE NOT SCARY! That is just as much of a cop out as being racist or homophobic..judging someone by the way they look..and yeah..they are all different races....

Thing is...I don't give a fuck if you approve of or accept my sexuality..that is your business. I don't do the hand wringing thing either...I am proud of who and what I am and very happy about it so I never announce I am gay...I instead introduce them to my boyfriend because it is natural and normal...and every single of them appreciate the opportunity to know a gay person...and they relax fast and also include me in the group fast.....an "if" they ever had a problem with it...they sure get over it fast. They actually get very comfortable....more than one would expect if one were to believe the stereotypes...

...and I know I made it a lot easier for other gay people...by being who I am and NOT caring who they are....they are entitled to their thoughts BUT you really can make a difference when you conduct yourself in a way that shows you are comfortable with yourself and don't need to have approval and acceptance...that is how you get it actually....NOT by whining about it. ...or shaking your finger at them.

^ well said.

Essentially, if you want to effect change, then be that change by way of example.

I still stand by what I said in my previous post that hatred is a learned behavior reinforced by our dogmatic institutions of influence and I will continually point out all the BS and enjoy throwing it in hypocrites' faces.

weeee!

How does one just stop being a racist, homophobe, bigot etc.?

Or are we saying the all white Oscar nominations are just a random fluke?

It's a question akin to asking "how do I live with a healthy mindset" or "how do I live in a physically healthy way?" It's a process, there isn't a magical endpoint. But a required starting point is acknowledging that we are all raised in racist cultures and with unconscious racism bred and bled into us from our families and communities from precognition. It often surprises white people, but this absolutely includes minorities.

A great way to NOT stop, is to spend most of one's time rationalizing and making excuses or arguments for how it really isn't as big of a problem as people claim (or isn't a problem at all). And being American, it's the context I know best and the only one I can really speak for-- Americans love doing this. I don't think there's actual honest widespread disagreement as to whether or not we all expect people of different races to be treated differently in many of the same situations. The actual disagreement is whether or not this is perfectly understandable and acceptable.

We must assume that MLKing would reject affirmative action, and the democrat principle of hiring "minorities to the maximum extent possible.[/QU

Yo are an ass hole and wrong your comments come off like a Nazi!

MJKs vision of a society in which men are not judged by the color of their skin is inconsistent with affirmative action.

"We" can "assume" a lot of things....but to assume what you are saying is true would make an ass out of u and me....

I share this opinion...however...Utopia has yet to take root....and until such time arrives, I believe that Dr. King would have supported affirmative action, as a means to achieve the Utopian vision that he dreamt.

It's true, you also have to look at big production companies like Disney and Fox who perpetuate racial intolerance with their casting practices, but like to balk that they are "diverse".

They study to determine what sells.

I say if they do keep the imagery, they should do it in context, and that children are taught that by modern standards, this is wrong. Killing people is no longer tolerated in a modern civilised society.

Draven, what examples of intolerance are you thinking of? Disney isn't exactly a white Mecca when you go to their movies, theme parks, or look at their employee rosters.

How do they promote intolerance?

I can go to a black BBQ joint in Memphis and may or may not be welcome, as they have cultural thing going on. Even I wouldn't interpret that as intolerance of my race, only that they were gathered as their own for their own cultural thing. It wouldn't occur to me that because they went to an ostensibly blacks only business that the business was somehow indoctrinating them to be intolerant of whites.
