Boy-that is a loaded question to be asking a bunch of gays.

I eat Genisoy soy protein bars all of the time. They have a great taste. They also have an MLO brand. Lots of protein shakes and powders along with good tasting bars. Check it out: www.genisoy.com

I drink Isopure low-carb, not the carb-free version and I love it. It dissolves well, has a decent taste (best i've had yet) and has made a big difference with me. I have one or two everyday with my vigorous work-outs and I love what it is doing. I can tell the difference between those shakes and the cheap ones.

Now for the disgusting yet honest part. One of the main reasons I like Isopure is because that form of whey protein has a greater amount of "whey protein isolate" than "whey protein concentrate", which is more of a junk/bulk protein filler. Also, the cross-filtered ionated whey in the higher end brands like Isopure will help you from getting stomach cramps and really bad gas. With the mixes with a greater concentration of concentrate than isolate, I had horrible trouble with those things, as did all of my weight liting friends. It's more expensive, but totally worth it.

The Usana Corp. makes and distributes a high quality product, and I think is only available from Usana.com, or one of their agents. It is called Nutrimeal. It is a macro optimizer. Available in chocolate, french vanilla, and strawberry. I prefer the chocolate.
Years ago I used a product called Spirotein, which was also pretty good. I think that came from a health foods store. I add banana along with ice cubes to the blender, and a dash of Splenda, and voila! Tastes like a milkshake. Take a look at these. Good luck.

protein shakes? just eat healthy. I think that's all a gimmick personally.

As long as it's good quality protein, you can pretty much go as cheap as you can find it. Costco has a high-protein/low carb whey protein with 27 grams/serving for around $20 for the same amount GNC will charge more than twice as much for...a good bargain.

Once again, be careful of the type. The sam's club stuff is the same that Wal-mart offers, but it is full of filler protein and whey protein concentrate, not isolate. It gives about one shake a month at 23g per shake. Cost=$12.99 jug, so about 43 cents per shake with 23 g so about 0.0188 cents per gram per shake. The Isopure with one scoop gives you 25g of protein per shake, has a higher quality, has the irritating lactose removed and serves about 104 shakes at 25g a piece. The cost of the bucket is $75 online, so that works to 0.0287 cents per gram per shake. Yes, it's a little more expensive, but when you work it out, for the added quality and ease of digestion, it is far beyond worth it. :D

I really like Muscle Milk... it tastes the best out of the various brands I've tried. No matter what brand you choose, be careful that you're getting calories from protein and not just a lot of sugar.

And don't forget carbs!! So many people think it is all about the protein. But if you eat all protein, then your body breaks it down to use as energy and it is worthless. That's why you need protein-sparring carbs so the body uses the carbs for energy and the protein to build muscle... And I still think the shakes are a total waste of money.

I'm a strong believer in Natural Foods. However, our lifestyle demands us to take shortcuts. Ask how many nutritionists out there that take 5 servings of fruits and vegetables, Lean quality protein and A BALANCED RATIO OF OMEGA 3 AND 6 FATTY ACIDS? The amount of them is as many as honest Insurance Agents world wide.It is almost impossible to take whole foods everyday. So, what should we do? Supplements have never been a new thing these days. But with thousands of brands out there, which one to choose? I personally think that the best supplements are those which are as near to natural foods as possible. Those that has the quality and properties of natural foods. And those which is Organic, just as nature intended.
For years, I've been a loyal consumer for Nutrilite brand. I've been a GNC retail staff before and had experienced their trainings. As an employee for GNC,I tried to put my faith in GNC. But the black and white always win.Though Nutrilite does not focus on cure, sports supplements, & theraputic properties, they have fantastic dietary supplements. Yes, I do sound like Quixtar Distributor. But I'm just giving my opinion. Maybe you ought to look for yourself since seeing is believing. http://nutrilite.com/en-us/home.aspx? Good Luck!..|

My protein shake is as follows(or at least one version of it)

8 ounces of non fat yogurt(11 grams of protein)
8 ounces of non fat milk(11 grams of protein)
3 scoops of whey protein, low carb/low fat(66 grams of protein)
blueberries(1 gram of protein)
raspberries(1 gram of protein)

so its about 600 calorie shake(which you can split into two), with 88 grams of protein, its low carb and all no fat.

If you want some extra flavor or fat and protein, add two tablespoons of natural peanut butter into the shake and maybe a banana.

HansHans... to answer your question, Yes. Protein is a very general term and is used for a lot of different things including transporting materials in and out of cells. But people take the shakes b/c proteins are used to build muscle mass. Muscles are, after all, cells. So to make more of them, or to make current cells bigger requires protein. But protein shakes without working out won't help b/c protein can also be used for other things... such as energy. It's all about balance.

I prefer the idea of using everyday foods for my protein. Its generally less expensive and more palatable. The homemade shake above is a great example. Also, some foods high in protein are:

meats - beef, chicken, fish, turkey, lamb
milk and cheese - yogurt, cottage cheese, cream cheese
eggs
peanut butter
dried beans and peas

Try to work more of these into your diet.

my thoughts exactly
but to answer the actual question i never understood why people wanted to gain weight, do u really need something that makes u fat to get more muscle cant u just exercise

Even at 45, my metabolic rate is so high that if I didn't supplement my already-healthy diet with protein supplements, the level at which I exercise would result in a weight loss. I'm almost 6' and weigh 170...up from 165. The shakes are an easy way to help build muscle as part of my gym regimen.

They also help stabilize blood sugar levels, which, given my history of hypoglycemia, is very important.
