I think it is a case of convergent evolution. This is what right wing parties and right wing people do - fear and hate mongering about unpopular minorities, and no gays are not the only targets. Historically in Eastern Europe it has been the Jews, Roma, and foreigners.

I think the fact that it's the last openly acceptable prejudice is also why people hang onto it so tenaciously, and why attempts to explain to people why gay bashing terminology is not cool tends to elicit, rather than a defense of homophobia, instead some monologue about "P.C." and how it's gone too far. You begin to realize that it's almost like having a discussion in code about how if they had their way it would still be cool to "tell the real truth" (heavy quotes) about women, blacks, hispanics, but that some shrill P.C. conspiracy out there has taken away the entitlement to do so.

Bush very successfully used anti-gay bigotry to promote himself and his party. The hatred helped him to win re-election and get anti-gay laws passed throughout most of the USA. Bush stirred up political enthusiasm for himself and his party by teaching Americans that it was moral and patriotic to hate gay people.

I am sure this lesson is not lost on Putin.

He said several times that this law is not against sex. On TV yesterday he said that some countries have ban for gay sex, but not ours.

One lawyer and MP leader also said that sex ban will be against international laws and so it's impossible.

It's not sex ban, but propaganda ban. Silly. Awful. But you can't help.

I think no matter where the winter Olympics are held would be more inline with the upper incomes of the location. Winter sports are overall more exclusive to big money. Even recreational skiing is not a leisure activity the majority can afford. You will find no cheap food or lodging in Vail, Breckenridge, ASPEN, Lake Placid, or Park City. I can understand where you are coming from. It is because many of these sporting events appeal to affluent who can spend 300 dollars for a nice pair of skiing gloves that the media covers every detail. The athletes, sadly are really second seats in all the Olympic hoopla.
