Is it a good idea for gays to watch Queer as Folk and Six Feet Under?

I know. But I just don't see the point in constantly complaining about it. What's a tiny, quiet, web-logged complaint gonna do to change things?

Nope! I don't think so at all, just watch what you want to watch... I don't think there's anything that anyone HAS to watch... I mean most TV shows that you watch you forget most of the details after a few years anyways... :)

I've seen every episode of both these series and I have to say, Queer as Folk (the North American version) is catered to a niche market and you can definitely tell. The plot, characters, production and theme are all very gay and I mean that in the offensive way. It's a just a plain trashy TV show. There. I said it. It may have been groundbreaking but only because it was the only show to feature and be completely dedicated to all "homosexual characters". I watched it in my teens just to get a sense of how being a full-fledged adult gay male would be like, but I honestly hated what I saw. The things portrayed on that show made being gay something that nobody would ever want to be. That's just my opinion.

Six Feet Under has got to be one of the greatest TV series of all time though. Hands down. The whole premise of the show is so incredible. Imagine death surrounding your family's entire lives because you own a funeral home. Most people have to deal with death a mere handful of times, but it's your job to handle it every single day. How fucked up do you think you and your children would turn out?

I think you took Queer as Folk a bit too literally and failed to realize the humor in some of it's portrayal. I think for the most part if you realize the show eventually at times becomes a self-reflexive satire, the show seems alot more approachable.

For example, the whole "Rage" comic-book is a direct satire of Brian Kinney's character and his relationship to the story. He himself has become such a sexual-fantasy character that in a sense he becomes the embodiment of a super hero. A fantasy in a hero-myth.

Indeed, the niche market is for gay people but more specifically for adults who are living that life. An exaggeration of the sexaulization of the male-homosexual world. I think however, if you can find what is satire and what is "message" the show still has alot of redeemable quality in it.

I could agree with this in a sense. I mean I think Star Trek: TNG is the Greatest tv series of all time but I really do think Six Feet Under is great. I just watched the complete series and I cried at the end (I can say...I've only ever cried during Old Yellar, Marley and Me, and Six Feet Under). The approach of celebrating life through it's reflection of death is a theme I found absolutely fantastic.

Everyone not just gays should watch SFU, the best show of all time imo; QAF is a decent show, not gonna recommend the entire series but I think gays should watch at least a few episodes.

I watched five minutes of QAF and decided that was enough.
As to SFU,fairly decent show but the boi and I still prefer our crime shows and national geographic shows.

I'm rewatching Six Feet Under and love it just as much as the first time I saw it.

I like QAF a great deal. I realize it isn't "great" in the same way that SFU is but I think its heart was in the right place and even though the story lines and the acting sometimes were fizzy the show covered many aspects of gay life, from the ridiculous to the sublime.
