Question for non-Americans

Chicken and waffles is really good - contrasting textures, flavors, all that. I didn't know it was a Southern thing - as someone else posted, I think - I thought it was a West Coast thing.

I was going to say apple pie...but...I saw a commercial while watching MTV about a bacon sundae. The picture made me want to literally vomit...but the mention of cheese-in-a-can above is just fucking awful. Good Lord.

I only became aware of the cheese in a can thing after watching an episode of Frasier. I was both fascintated and mortified, not sure in which order.

When I was living in Geneva, I would visit the American Market every now and then to cure my homesickness. The things I bought were mostly Jell-O, Oreos, and Kraft mac and cheese. One of the employees had never seen Kraft mac & cheese before, and the other cashier had to explain what it was. She concluded with "it's not bad." I had to chuckle, because I was buying it specifically because I was craving some bad American food.

I'm surprised more non-Americans aren't saying hot dogs and apple pie...that's what I'd think is stereotypical.

Hot Dogs may be American, but the Frankfurters inside them make me think more of their German origins (and of Frank N Furter of course!).

I had apple pie for pudding probably every other Sunday when I was a kid. To me, there's nothing uniquely American about that.

For me, the number one would probably be Twinkies. They're frequently mentioned on a lot of American based TV shows / Movies I've seen. They've been 'advertised' to me so much through said mediums that if I'm ever lucky enough to go to America, trying one is certainly on my 'to-do' list.

To a lesser extent, despite them being German foods (correct me if I'm wrong), foods like hamburgers / hot dogs (probably from hearing about the copious hot dog stands in NY etc.) spring to mind.

Coke, too.

Hmm...It's all unhealthy; perhaps I'm buying into the stereotypes a little

That's because Americans are known for their Three Gs: Guns, God and Gastrointestinal problems.

the bad tasting peanut butter is very american, american eat a lot of catfish,at least this is what i have seen here in south florida,so i can't generalize.corn is another thing that they eat a lot and also potatoes.they love to have barbecues too, which i love by the way.

That would be sort of hard, especially as peanuts are native to North America, and peanut butter itself was invented by the Aztecs....

Sorry, I should have clarified that "nut butter", or paste made from nuts, not specifically peanuts, can be found in African and Chinese culture dating back centuries. As can peanut butter be seen in South American cultures. My point being that it's not an invention of the US, and certainly isn't unique to the US either.

Of course, nowadays, more than 40 percent of the world's peanuts are grown in China, vs less than 7 percent in the US.

is that really good chicken an wafles on the same plate?
maybe i need a picture.....

One thing that caught me off guard was "chewing gum". I am a chronic gum chewer.........seems a bit odd to think of that as American.

the strangest thing that happend to me when i was in nyc... was that i was arrested by the nypd because i was smoking a cigarette across the street of a gas station.
thank god my moslim arab friend stay in the hotel when this happend.....they make a big deal about it.......i dont even know why.....
