It's because the American media is very much "white-washed" where most archetypes of skin color, character, actors, and personalities default to white. It is very rare to see a minority take a lead role as a major news anchor, television actor, etc. As a result, it's more permissible for such a media to racially criticize itself with racial slurs, whereas, it wouldn't be as acceptable to make similar comments towards other minorities. However, one could argue the lack of presence of minority representation in media is even more offensive as the majority white being called rednecks on national television.


... Thanks. That bastard!!! I did take it as an insult and told him to mever call me that again. He tried to lie his way out of it saying it is an affectionate term used amongst close friends. I'm not American so I really didn't know.
