It's because the American media is very much "white-washed" where most archetypes of skin color, character, actors, and personalities default to white. It is very rare to see a minority take a lead role as a major news anchor, television actor, etc. As a result, it's more permissible for such a media to racially criticize itself with racial slurs, whereas, it wouldn't be as acceptable to make similar comments towards other minorities. However, one could argue the lack of presence of minority representation in media is even more offensive as the majority white being called rednecks on national television.

White trash and redneck aren't racist terms. It's just refers too a white person who was brought up and raised in a poor/rural atmosphere. Honky and cracker are though. That's why it's perfectly fine for someone to say redneck and white trash whereas if someone said the latter words, it could be deemed as racist.

Both are pejorative terms referring to a group of mostly white people. Typically it has little to do with racial status but with socio-economical status.

I do not consider those terms in the same category of insults typically lobbed at blacks and gays.

In the U.S., are the terms white trash/redneck akin to saying "_____ is so ghetto"?

Or is ghetto considered racist? I'm not clear on that, tbh.

It is similar, yes. 'Ghetto' isn't necessarily racist as it usually describes characteristics other than one's race.

I rarely hear these terms used to denote people just from a specific part of the country, or even in a certain socio-economic class. If you're poor and from the South, it won't immediately lead to people to consider you "white trash" or a "redneck" (or "trailer trash"). It's almost always a state of mind, if you will. Generally not just closed-minded and un(der)educated, but exceptionally proud of that characteristic.

As you probably guessed, I'm not American (US citizen) all I know about it is from Tv and movies, And I've noticed something through the years.

Why is it socially acceptable to call people back and forth "Redneck" and/or "White Trash"? To me most white americans share the same racial profile.

Why aren't those words considered hurtful like the ones used to insult african americans, gay people or any other minority?

I mean when I hear people using them, I can see a clear motivation to insult or hurt another person.

Isn't it the same? Or Am I missing something?

Redneck has its pros and cons but its more about the perception that comes with the name. White trash is pretty much scum.

I live in Australia and the words 'Ghetto' and 'Urban' are used because people here are scared to use the word 'African-American'.

I've never had an issue with it, though it is not really a big part of Aussie life. I have plenty of African friends, but I think I've only ever met 3 African-Americans in Australia my entire life.

I'm a fairly straight shooter to be honest though, and not really concerned about the ramifications. If I have to use ethnic descriptions, I stick to the oldschool police descriptions. At least then people can't accuse you of being 'insensitive'.

With two of my closer friends however (one is from Fiji, the other is Lebanese) we probably sound completely racist. The Fijiian guy calls me casper, we usually refer to the Lebanese guy as bomberman, and the Lebanese guy usually calls me slutbag or whore haha.

Political correctness... whats that

My family is the Northern US version of rednecks - hicks. And they seem to be quite proud of it.

I'm not trying to start anything with you, but black people would not be called african american in australia. they would be aborginal, black australian, or fijian.

Nope, it's not racial at all my friend.. Its economic profiling.. And actually some folks are proud to be considered 'rednecks'.. it's not usually considered a slur at all.. it denotes people that work hard in the out of doors and get a 'red neck' from being in the sun.
Like people that farm or ranch, or maybe work in forests cutting down trees (lumber jacks).. I don't think it is racial at all.
White trash is also not racial.. its economic.
And that is not a term that people would embrace as they would the term 'redneck'... There are many poor whites that live in poor areas, usually in the Southern USA but in other parts as well. They usually suffer from poor education, but many are church going folk that live as good a life as they can. But poor people don't usually get the educational opportunities if they live in a poor community or if they are kids they may not have had the benefit of a two parent family.. Sometimes drugs are involved with the parent raising the kids, so the kids grow up without much guidance and they have a very tough chance at succeeding in life.
It's not racial man.
I do not know where you live or where you are from. All things in the USA are not racial despite what some folks may have you believe (i.e Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Louis Farakhan)...I believe that 95% of Americans are truly fair or try to be on racial terms. There are some pinheads to be sure.. and sometimes religion plays a role.. But I'd rather live there than anyplace that has to deal with the Taliban or the extremists in Pakistan or Iran or many other places.

I'm still trying to understand that endearing American term, Dumbass. When my American friend first called me that I got down right insulted.

Oh reeaaaaallllly :grrr:... Thanks. That bastard!!! I did take it as an insult and told him to mever call me that again. He tried to lie his way out of it saying it is an affectionate term used amongst close friends. I'm not American so I really didn't know.
