Quotable quotes

"With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things.
But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion"
- Steven Weinberg

Two men stand at a couple of urinals somewhere upmarket and posh. Probably in the south of England.

One of them finishes the job and heads for the sink. This man is an old Etonian. He washes his hands, and sidles towards the towel. As he sidles, the other man finishes the job, ignores the sink, and heads for the door.

This man is Winston Churchill. As Winston approaches the exit, the old Etonian cries out:

"At Eton, they taught us to wash our hands after using the toilet"

Churchill takes a puff of the cigar in his left hand. He exhales. And speaks.

"At Harrow,’ he replies, ‘they taught us not to piss on our hands."

"Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Because inside of a dog, it's too dark to read." Groucho Marx

“Tout homme qui est un vrai homme doit apprendre à rester seul au milieu de tous, à penser seul pour tous - et au besoin contre tous.”

Romain Rolland

"Those who know, are not quoted. Those who quote, do not know".

bel JUB

^ Clearly that couldn't be a quote from Ivan Pavlov.

I once took a psychology class where the professor spoke on Pavlov and salivation, except he left out the pronunciation of one little vowel in the word.

It was a. bit strange to hear a lecture on the salvation of.Pavlov's dogs.

One gets to really know partners when divorcing, siblings when inheriting, descendants in old age and friends in hard times. - Isidro Montalvo

^ Unfortunately, the latter is not really something that can be assumed. Too often, one's friends become silent or mostly disappear when somebody is going through hard times.

Anybody who's a friend and who's experienced hard times (and if I've been aware of that) has known that I don't scurry away from such things.

'Utinam tot vel sciremus, vel etiam discere vellemus, quot hi libri, qui etiam nunc extant, nos docere possunt. Sed nimium delicati sumus: quae absunt cupimus, quae adsunt negligimus.' - Leonardo Bruni, Ad Petrum Paulum Histrum dialogus
