Dear KaraBulut & others...

Is it possible for a guy to have a recurring anal/rectal yeast infection? Is it at all common?

Every once in awhile I've always found the skin between my bum-cheeks (hehe) and further down, (aka right on my anus) to become very irritated, especially when being wiped with toilet paper or when water comes into contact with it in the shower.

Lately it's been more specifically than ever the anus itself, which led me to think perhaps my HPV warts were returning. However, since being all cleared up almost a year ago, whenever I've gone to the clinic for a check-up all they tell me is that I'm fine now, and the skin just looks a little dry or irritated.

But it's more than just dry/irritated. It can feel just awfully sore, and Monistat makes it better every time.

Is this reasonable? Would it happen every two months or so in a guy? And, would my yeast intolerance (baker's and brewer's) have anything to do with it?

Thanks!!!

Have you asked these questions of your doctor? I recommend you do so soon...I am sure he/she will be able to diagnose your problem and recommend a proper course of treatment. Cheers!

From my perspective the data that you offer us is inconclusive. As a guess I doubt whether the issue is one of a yeast infection. A dermatologist's examination is recommended should this matter continue to cause you concern. A further thought I recommend that you wear only 100 percent cotton underwear. No underwear which includes artificial fibres, either in part, or in total.

Your yeast intolerance may be addressed with a regular intake of Acidophilus:

What's not clear is whether you're describing jock itch (tinea cruris) or what people call a "yeast infection" which is an overgrowth of a naturally occuring fungus called candida.

These are just fungal infections. They thrive in moist, dark areas like the folds of skin. Since you're reporting that it responds to a topical antifungal (Monistat), then it does sound like a fungal overgrowth.

Treating these infections begins with prevention. Cotton underwear, drying well after a shower, using body powders and zinc oxide ointments- these are all things that are recommended to prevent overgrowth of fungal infections.

But if the problem is persisting in spite of your attempts at prevention and in spite of the treatment with Monistat, you need to ask your doctor to confirm that it is a fungal overgrowth and not another problem.

Yeah I'm not too worried-- I'm HIV-negative-- I should have specified (as I know yeast infections/thrush can be symptomatic) and it does seem to respond to Monistat etc.

So long as that works I guess I don't really need to know what it is, because that would mean it's a fungal issue.

I just wonder why this has always happened to me more... do some people's bodies have greater susceptibility? Could it be related to my food intolerances?

wasn't there something with hemorrhoids itching as well?

Diet is a contributory factor. (1)

Try Acidophilus. Available, without prescription, from your local pharmacist, or health food/supplements retail outlet.

Acidophilus has a well established reputation for preventing Candida albicans outbreaks.

Nystatin taken on a regular basis can create the very environment that permits Candida albicans to flourish.

I actually normally take my probiotics in a very potent form by having a tablespoon of "Bio-K" fermented milk (yogurt) every day. The last few weeks I've gone without it. So come to think of it, that probably has greatly contributed to my problem, being without it lately.
