Liverpool were quick to shut down speculation that arose late Thursday suggesting owner John W. Henry was looking to sell the club.
According to a report from the New York Post's Josh Kosman, an unnamed source said Henry, the co-founder of Fenway Sports Group, which also owns Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox, was quietly entertaining offers for the Premier League club, asking for a price above $2 billion (£1.53 billion).
The North American company, however, has adamantly denied the claims.
"As loathed as we are to give a story of this nature a meaningful response, on behalf of the club's ownership I can completely dismiss this unfounded speculation," a Liverpool spokesperson said, according to Liverpool Echo's James Pearce. "To repeat once again, the club is not for sale, including any 'quiet process' or anything of that nature."
Henry first took over Liverpool in October 2010 when his Fenway Sports Group - then known as New England Sports Ventures - paid £300 million to purchase the club from fellow American businessmen George Gillett and Tom Hicks.
