You know the Christians are really going to push to convert people in these countries now

Re: Religion may become extinct in nine nations, study says

Happy to see that Norway is not on that list.. sigh. I accepted Norway as a christian nation a long time ago. It sucks, but it's never gonna change.. people are still VERY christian and VERY conservative here. It doesn't help that I live in the bible belt either :(

BTW.. Norway is probably the most christian and conservative country in all of Scandinavia and the Nordic countries, hell, all of northern Europe. Countries like The Netherlands and Belgium are a lot more progressive and liberal than this shitty country! I want to move.. HATE it here.

That's probably true, since many religious people are guilty of creating a self-fulfilling prophecy. I really hate to incite Godwin's Law, but Hitler is a very famous example of that (the pope wrote letters to him stating that the failed assassination attempt against him was proof that god was protecting him on his mission), and many people are attempting to self-fulfill the prophecies about Israel. That's why America kisses its ass so much with donations and letting it get away with anything.

Er...huh?

Just getting a letter from The Pope himself doesn't make the receiver religious. If you had ever bothered reading Mein Kampf, you would seriously debate Hitler's religious standing....

But Norway has done way more in progressing gay rights legislation in its country than most others????

Religion and religious affiliation are not the same thing.

Why would such otherwise clever academics confuse the two, hmmm?

I've not got a problem with spirituality. My boyfriend's a pagan and I do adhere to certain aspects of Buddhism and certain pagan views too. What I do loath and detest is organised religion, the demise of which cannot come soon enough.

Religion Gene ? No such thing.

As long as there is no special treatment for religion it can't compete with reasons.

There may not be a specific gene, but I do believe research has been done that establishes a link between biology and the willingness to be religious...

http://www.viewzone.com/religiongene.html

^Starwarrior, one thing the scientists forgot to take into account is that the tendency to be religious is inherited. In fact, at one point, the existence of a "religion gene" was theorized.

Unless somehow that tendency dies out through natural selection, the scientists are wrong, once again.

Disgusting...

Anyway, the good thing about science is that even when you are wrong you still learn something...

Perhaps widespread, organized religion will lessen. I don't believe that people will ever cease to believe in God, or cease to possess personal faith in a higher power.

I like my church. I'm not sure I am into religion. Its been there for about two hundred years. We just let a phone company install a tower in our old bell tower and the lease money pays for all the bills.

We still have festivals and talent shows and all that as fundraisers, because its a community thing. We like getting to together to raise funds for our neighbor hood food pantry and stuff like that.

This is cultural and generational. Families have known each other in some instances amongst the elders as long as one hundred years.

Its not going away.

We listen to the pastor and consider his advice. We try as a group to make our little space a little better.

I don't think that harms anything.

The truth is–as you have agreed with me already–that religion will never die.

And as easily recognizable as introverted or extraverted personalities, the willingness to believe is a facet of psychology. Sometimes I wonder if a believer can stop believing. Certainly they can choose what to believe, and I think that is where the core of this study is going. It has been noted there is a difference between being religious/spiritual and Religion. Boston Pirate's post illustrates this as well...

It would be a good time to introduce a new "religion". One free of the trappings of the current religions. But then again, we are dealing with humans so is that ever possible?

The least we could do is stop blowing smoke up our asses... Telling ourselves about all the wonderful things that could happen to us after we die, and start enjoying the wonderful things that happen to us while we are still here....

Re: Religion may become extinct in nine nations, study says

Lets see here.. 50 % is against the new marriage law, including our second largest (extreme right) political party. A bitch from my town is even suing the state because now here marriage is now less worthy (her words).

I live in the bible belt of Norway, and trust me.. if you asked people here, I'm pretty sure 70 % of the population would be against gay marriage. We have more churches per capita than any other city in the country. And church weddings for gay couples is not legal in Norway yet, but priests can perform "blessings" in the church room for christian gay couples. Anyway, priests can still reserve themselves from performing the blessings. ONE priest in my city.. ONE FUCKING priest has sad yes to performing the blessing for gay couples.. NOBODY else. And this city has hundreds, maybe thousands of priests.only ONE is willing to do it Oslo has like hundreds of priests willing to do this, my city, the second largest city in Norway has ONE.

The conservative parties lead the gallup polls, so I have a feeling they will win the next election in two years. One of these parties is gay friendly and support LGBT rights, but the other one, to the extreme right, is EXTREMELY conservative, and against ANYTHING gay.. against financial support for gay organizations, against teaching about homosexuality in schools, they also said they want to remove the marriage law.

We basically only got the new marriage law because of our current, progressive, socialist government. But they will not last long, because we'll have a conservative government after the next election, and the society is still in general VERY conservative. I still hear about gay people being bashed, even in our more progressive capital. I read a lot of negative comments towards gay people on the internet every day, and I read a lot of articles about discrimination against gay couples, and it seems like people in general agree with these homophobes.

Trust me when I say this: Norway is FAR from as progressive and liberal as we seem. We never would have had that new marriage law if it wasn't for our government.

^An interesting, and informative reflection from Norway.

Thank you for being so articulate with your opinion.

Well.. not all parts of Norway are bad.. eastern, middle and northern Norway is generally progressive and liberal. Southern and western Norway on the other hand is called "the bible belt," so it basically says itself that it's a lot more conservative and christian.

But yeah, I'd say that Norway is still a very conservative country overall, especially compared to our MUCH more liberal and progressive neighbors, like Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Iceland. Don't get fooled by the gay marriage thing. That really doesn't say much about the general attitudes in the Norwegian society.

I want to move, because I'm getting sick of it to be honest..

I doubt that belief in God or a power greater than ourselves will ever go away. Having said that, at the risk of sounding judgmental, organized religion can't disappear soon enough. It is the cause and effect for most of the bloodshed in the world for the past 3000 years. Most of the so-called "social issues" in this country are a bi-product of the organized religion "junkies". One would think that the more educated a nation becomes, the less it would pander to religious hierarchy. That doesn't seem to be the case here...or if it is...half this country is comprised of uneducated idiots.

I'm assuming that once neuro biologists and medical geneticists isolate the "Gay"gene and the "Queer part" of the brain, homosexuality will falter.

Once people realise it's all in their heads a social stigma will grow and people won't bother with it any more.

Yes, sadly that's also a distinct possibility aside from being genetic (much like predisposition to religion).

It certainly would be interesting, religion is a great excuse for quite a lot of things...

I know its easy to make fun of Christians, but they do it to themselves. I feel that other religions don't get has much heat and sadly none of them will disappear in our lifetime.
