On-Topic Republicans to Blame for Dysfunctional Congress

I was responding to Roly's lie that the Republicans said "kill the n....". Objecting to his being foreign or Muslim would be perfectly logical. It is logical to prefer someone who appreciates our culture, our economy, our values, our traditions. Calling that "racist" is another falsehood. Liberals frequently accuse Republicans of being "outside the mainstream".

Since no one believes that even the current Republican leadership is stupid enough to announce an official policy to refuse to compromise on anything (although they come close), perhaps it makes sense to ask this a different way. Has the Republican leadership in the House of Representatives or Senate done anything that indicates to you that they are willing to compromise on anything with the Democrats?

Its times like these, when the thread starts to unravel, that we get to see the nakedness of our fears.

The sequestration bill was a compromise.

That's your only example? The Republicans in Congress manufacture a crisis where none exists, nearly drive the economy off a cliff by bringing the federal government to the brink of default, rattle the world markets, cause the first ever reduction in the governments AAA rating, and at the last minute pull back to avert complete catastrophe.

That indicates to you a willingness to compromise?

Yes. The Dems wanted to keep borrowing, spending, borrowing, spending, with no limitation or thought for the future. The sequestration was a compromise forced upon the Republicans by trying to put on the breaks.

race relations in the U.S. are just fine thank you

We elected a black president - did you hear?

2/3 of the american public like him - even with > 8% unemployment for 3+ years and staggering debt

if we were doing better, 3/4 would like him

that's not racist

that's love or at least like

so take your not in this country blather about this country and ......... well u know

Chance, President Obama is popular and I doubt if much of that is due to his race. I'm glad a black person got elected to the office of President (much preferred Hillary though), but race relations in the U.S. are not much advanced from the mid-50/60's. Somewhat but not much - look at prison statistics, violent crime statistics, poor income statistics, and you will find a ver common thread there, the black americans are definitely disnfranchised Americans.

Benvolio: I've been reading some of your posts and am confused, are you up on current events in our great nation, or just log on to spew out anything and everything to get a response -- oh much like the tea baggers do, but if you check, i think you will find that the GOP has the majority of seats in the House of Rep (not in the Senate) -- maybe that's the distinction you're trying to make. The failure in the system right now is that the tea bagges have control of the house, not the GOP.
Sorry, Republicans don 't control Congress.

Republicans control the House, but not the Senate, so they cannot do much, nor can the Senate.

No, Joe, we are not ready to see our servicemen and women denied pay checks, we are not ready to see employees sent home, we are READY for those in Congress to start EARNING their PAYCHECK and give the American people real and effective REPRESENTATION. Tea Party members go home, GOP members get a spine, a back bone and start doing your job.

Too bad we can't have a referendum on whether the Congresscritters get paid -- like, once a month.

Allen West, Joe Walsh and their type are the source of what will bring down our nation. They are self-centered, do anything say anything just to get their name in print or be in front of a camera. They have no interest in doing ONE THING that will improve the daily lives of our citizens or advance our nation. They are IGNORANT, they hate America and hard working Americans. They and their type are the REAL enemies of our nation. And they're going to destroy it while America sleeps.

IIRC, Walsh is one of the reasons that anything at all gets done. I seem to recall that without him, the Tea Party and the "old" Republicans would hardly be talking.

Yes. The Dems wanted to keep borrowing, spending, borrowing, spending, with no limitation or thought for the future. The sequestration was a compromise forced upon the Republicans by trying to put on the breaks.

Who did all the borrowing and spending from 2000 to 2006? In those years, the Republicans controlled the presidency and both houses of Congress.

I had remarked in another forum some time ago about Hannah Arendt's observation that committed totalitarians used democratic institutions to undermine democracy itself by making those institutions ineffective, thus convincing the masses that democracy itself did not work. The Tea Party Republicans are doing much the same thing today. They make governance impossible by grinding Congress to a halt, thus convincing people that government is ineffective.

Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism

We should all be alarmed that the Tea Party Republicans have adopted wholesale the the parliamentary tactics of early 20th Century totalitarians to undermine our democracy.

Arendt is worth reading. She does in very scholarly fashion what many people see in a sort of gut reaction.

BTW, this is exactly why the Founding Fathers and Framers tried to limit democracy: it is all too easily a road to tyranny.

Obama and Democrats have made several efforts to meet the Republicans half way and gotten little for it. Dropping the public option from the ACA would be one prime example.

Understatement! Obama has done a Clinton in proposing and supporting Republican-born ideas, and that's not good enough.

Yes, it's lovely how people started arguing with me on whether anybody has REALLY said the CLEARLY exaggerated quote I posted. No, nobody has. But in a time of serious crisis to say "our number one goal is to make him one-term president" before the guy had even started presidenting is moronic and near-criminal if not legally, then morally.

I call it treason.

Nonsense. Who is the enemy recieving aid and comfort? What war? Wanting to limit the President is very logical if you disagree with his intended agenda and policies.

The republican congress had another vote to repeal "Obamacare" for the 30th time. Did they vote to repeal their own? Nope, in the repeal they voted to protect and enhance their own government run gold plated health care.

Democrats Mock GOP For Protecting Own Health Care In Repeal Vote

They want it, but not for you.

And where are all these jobs jobs jogs they said they wold work on?

Read this book. It's all in there. The obstruction was a fait accompli at the time of "Hussein's" inauguration.

I still say Obama should man up and call them back into session. he can only do so in extraordinary circumstances... to me not performing your fiscal duty by not actually signing a budget for three years is not performing your duty and extraordinary. i think most of America would agree....

9 weeks of vacation time for our shitty little scoundrels in office. Fucking Amazing.

The entire attitude is a vestige of the Reagan-Bush years: "Screw you. I've got mine."
