Retailers at risk of closing

My reasoning about WM buying the Craftsman brand is they are about the only company these days that has the cash/credit to buy it. WM seems to be focusing on brands these days, too. They now sell Apple's iPhone, Sony electronics, Stanley tools, Levi's, Wrangler, Dickies, etc. They recently inked a deal to distribute some well-known Women's apparel brands, but since I don't do Women's clothes , I don't remember which ones.

With regards to Sears, the big issue is they OWN so much of their own real estate as opposed to lease, they figure as long as they break even (or come close), it is better to keep the tired old outlets open rather than shutter them and let the real estate sit. Especially with their KMart locations.

Sears would be foolish to sell Craftsman. I'd hate to see WalMart get it; I somehow doubt it would continue to have its lifetime guarantee.

The brand is already spun-off from Sears Holdings; it is now owned by KCD IP, LLC (Kenmore Craftsman DieHard Intellectual Property, Limited Liability Company), controlled by Sears Holdings. If SH goes belly up, the assets will have to be sold.

At this rate, in a couple of years the only place to shop will be Walmart ;)

Is Target having trouble? I hope not. I would like to see Target buy the Craftsman/Kenmore brands. They could sell more stock to finance it. I would love to buy stock in that deal. I think that those brands would work well with Target.

Hey...I have bought a marble outdoor table from target. They have customers that would be happy to pay more for quality goods, something WalMart does not have. I really never thought of Craftsman or Kenmore as being high end brands.....they really are not. They would do well with Target.

After a discussion with my Partner, I'm reminded of a couple more on the ropes:

Specialty Retailers: Eddie Bauer; Charming Shoppes (Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug, et al)

Technically, Not a Retailer but Important to Me:
Other: Charter Communications, MY CATV/Phone/Internet provider in Michigan. They just hired Bankruptcy Lawyers. I predict they will be sucked up by Comcast. BooooooooHisssssss (I've got Comcast in Colorado and it is marginal at best...)

Well, I was right about Charter. :(

No industry, company, or job is safe because no one knows how long the recession will last.

What's amazing is that there are dumbasses out there who blame "regulation" as if a regulation attacked Iraq and caused Bush to ignore the economy. I want the economy to improve, but if it were to get so bad that mobs of people started going house to house and chopping up republicans I would feel a lot better. We need an old-fashioned ideological cleansing.

I agree. I can't imagine Target closing down anytime soon. At least it's pretty huge all over California while Kmart has pretty much completely evacuated. Target has both Starbucks and Pizza Hut in some of their stores now. Target isn't bottom of the barrel like Walmart is and Craftsman and Kenmore are not high end at all, although Craftsman is a pretty solid brand. Their furniture of late is surprisingly good, and they have a decent selection of kitchen stuff and small appliances. Adding a bigger tool and big appliances sections to the store would be a really smart move.

As long as best buy never closes I keep my sanity. Best Buy has good prices anyways. Especially their online deals.

My friend, who works for Sears as a sales clerk, told me that at the Sears where he works (near Penn State University where he is doing his undergraduate studies) sales employees are being asked to push push and push merchandise "maintenance contracts" and "extended warranties" to their customers..............

..............those employees who are most successful at selling the most "maintenance contracts" and "extended warranties" to their customers will be awarded with more work hours than those employees who are not as successful at selling the "maintenance contracts" and "extended warranties"..............

..............seems as if for Sears "maintenance contracts" and "extended warranties" are nearly pure profit..............

Wow, I am kinda surprised that a tv station owner would go bankrupt. I thought tv was doing ok.

If the Obama girls wear the line of clothes from a retailer on the verge of bankruptcy, it will save them from going belly up.

I was thinking about this because people were saying Obama's use of his Blackberry could help sales. I think if the Obama family came out and started using/wearing some items from struggling stores it could really do wonders.

I was at my local mall last night and absolutely shocked that the McDonald's there was borded up. When McDonald's closes up then we all know that there's trouble ahead. I really believe that the mall will be shutting down this year. So many stores are out of business already. It's scary when a mall in Central New Jersey may close up.

McDonalds and Amazon.com are actually some of the FEW businesses doing very well in this economy.
