Ridley Scott returns for ALIEN prequel!

Re: Ridley Scott working on an 'Alien' prequel

I've seen it yesterday and it was much better than I feared it would be.
You probably won't exactly be thrilled, but you also won't be throwing your money away for this movie.

Re: Ridley Scott working on an 'Alien' prequel

I have the joy of not even remembering the movie "Alien" so I can't tarnish this viewing experience.

Those of you who are waiting for a review judged solely on this movie's performance and not thrown up against the greatest sci-fi feature of all time I will share as soon as my body is ready

Edit: Just read some of the reviews and it basically goes like this

1. Prometheus, is thrilling, haunting, and visually stunning. Alien is better.

2. Prometheus is sure to be a cult classic. Blade Runner is better.

People are so basic. Can't wait to see this.

Re: Ridley Scott working on an 'Alien' prequel

Saw it last night. I swear Fassbender was chilling, Theron brought her A game. A lot of nudges IMO to the various Alien films and it was a familiar yet different universe, by the end when it starts connecting you can actually rip holes in Alien but they aren't too worrying. Hopefully there will be a squeal. Story is easily sussed though.

Re: Ridley Scott working on an 'Alien' prequel

what do u mean rip holes in Alien? I saw a preview today for a brief second they show a create the back of it and it did not look like an alien create but was not human? Did they mention the Predators or do they show up? what happens to Space Jockey?

Re: Ridley Scott working on an 'Alien' prequel

do I need to watch Alien or Aliens BEFORE I watch Prometheus?
I have not seen it yet. But everything I have heard is that you do not need to see Alien first; although it would be a bonus to have seen it to fully appreciate the Prometheus ending. But much of Prometheus's disappointment seems to be stemming from people saying it is nothing at all like Alien and has very little connection to it (despite Scott already warning us about that for years). As for Aliens, that was an entirely different movie than Alien, so that is irrelevant.

Re: Ridley Scott working on an 'Alien' prequel

Just watched it tonight. It's not the movie I thought I was going to see but still pretty good. I might go see it in the theater when it comes out.

the face huggers start off as worm like creatures..they evolve..and end up having a huge face huger we have seen before..there is a show down between the Space Jokey ( he looses) and we find out it had that big ass hole in his chest.. in ALien..

Re: Ridley Scott working on an 'Alien' prequel

I just got back from seeing Prometheus tonight.

The visuals and the 3D were amazing. It was definately one of the better 3D movies I've seen. The story, I thought was pretty good. Parts of it seemed to follow the same general idea and direction as the original Alien, but it was still orginal enough to be different.

The only major problem I had with the movie, and my buddy agreed with me, was that the second half of the movie seemed a bit rushed and everything seemed to happen so fast and quickly, especially compared with the first half. The first half of the movie reminded me a lot of Alien, where things slowly took their time to unravel and things were fleshed out and developed, but there were things that happened in the second half that seemed to be cut short as though scenes were cut out so they didn't seem as fleshed out as they should have been.

I read in a interview that they cut out a lot of footage so that might explain why the second half seemed rushed.

***POSSIBLE SLIGHT SPOILER : HIGHLIGHT TO READ ***
I was a bit confused why they cast Guy Pearce in the role that he plays, not because he wasn't a good actor, he was, but they make up effects looked a little hokey. They could have just cast an old man in the role and achieved the same effect and had it look a lot more natural.

But overall I enjoyed it. It was very scary, but it was one of the more intelligent sci-fi movies that I've seen. I'd go see the sequal if and when it comes out, which I'm sure they will make, especially given the way that it ends.

Overall I would give it a 7/10.

Rating it against the other Alien movies I would rank it below Alien and Aliens, but higher than Alien 3 and Resurrection.

Did the creator say that they're working on a sequel? If not I don't understand why people think there will be one. There is no way to take that ending and start a whole new movie.

It's a shame that this wasn't as good as the first 2 Aliens especially considering they were made over 20 years ago.

I don't know if this is a SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER but

I was very disappointed with the size of the Engineers. I wish they could have made their original size work in this movie. I hate when movies take a different path from the original story.

Re: Ridley Scott working on an 'Alien' prequel

I will see it in 3D Friday.

I'm not expecting anything like the original, even though it's directed by Ridley Scott. These days movies are just different.
Also, from seeing the 'making of' on HBO I get the feeling they went the typical 'to hell with the story let's do some awesome fx' route.

Logan Marshall-Green looks good. I'd be his face hugger, and some other parts.

Re: Ridley Scott working on an 'Alien' prequel

I read an article in a film magazine where they interviewed people involved in production of the film and they said that they hoped to continue the story for a few more films.

And I remember reading long ago just before the film went into production that Scott wanted to film 2 movies back to back and then release them a few months apart but the studio declined. Either way I think if this film makes bank there will be another.

Hollywood always likes to cash in any way they can....

Re: Ridley Scott working on an 'Alien' prequel

For what it's worth, Ebert gave it 4/4 stars. Although he tends to be the most polarized of all critics. Typically rates films the highest or the lowest among the consensus of critics. And my opinions often wind up opposite of his. Still the guy is a respectable critic. This gives me a spark of more interest to see it this weekend.

Re: Ridley Scott working on an 'Alien' prequel

Saw it tonight in Imax 3D. I give it a 3 out of 4 stars.

Spoilers beyond this point . . .

The story is actually much more simplistic than reviews suggested; not at all complex or busy as some said. It's almost too simplistic. All the main characters did great with the material though. I was glad to see that it does have a key money-shot that tries to live up to Alien's horrifying dinner scene, although I doubt it will be remembered as a classic scene the same. And the ending scene is almost too gratuitous just as an attempt to appease Alien fans wanting to see a bit more Alien. 3D was great, although not entirely necessary.

If I had a primary beef with the movie, it is the way Lindelof's story attempts to explain how the Giger xenomorphs came to be. I had always imagined them to be an intelligent, yet savage and primitive, alien race from their own world. I had hoped someday we would get to see what their world is like. Lindelof killed my hopes for that, instead giving more focus to a different alien race (the "space jockey" race) responsible for cultivating the xenomorphs (merely by accident) and used for biological warfare before they morph out of control. But, the story got the job done, which was to provide a back-story of events leading to Alien.

Re: Ridley Scott working on an 'Alien' prequel

Why the human face in the pyramid? does any one survive the encounter? I was thinking that the lead female character might have actually been Ripley's mother but from I read not possible?

The face wasn't "human" it was the face of one of the "engineers" however, we share DNA with the "engineers" as they created us (In their image - just smaller and certainly less muscular).

Dude, I think you are over-thinking the story. If there is anything I learned from Lindelof's writing from Lost, is that his story does not go as deep as you might think. And as yeahright said, the face was likely of the engineer/space jockey race.

Re: Ridley Scott working on an 'Alien' prequel

We went to the 11pm showing last night and the place was PACKED...Prometheus was good and very Suspenseful from the beginning to end. There were no slow-parts. Charlize Theron is the Queen of Intensity. She Cuts you deep with those stares.

For those Aliens to be that Damn Muscular they must bench-press boulders and squat with Trees as weights on their Planet...

Michael Fassbender(X-Men First Class/Magneto) did a good job as the Droid and the Director & make-up artist chose to let his Sexiness remain human-like instead of giving him that traditional robotic Pale face and wig-like hair...Makes sense eye-candy-wise...

A little clarification on the scene where you-know-who swallows the cup of black stuff as the ship flies away then falls into the water...What is the viewer suppose to get from that scene? Why did he/it do the ritual on that planet? I'm trying to tie that scene to what we found out about them.

And something that I thought was odd is the Director choosing to put a younger actor like Guy Pearce in 100yr-old-man-makeup instead of hiring Sir Ian McKellen or Christopher Plummer or even Patrick Stewart....I dont get that...Could the Studio not afford to pay an Old actor's salary? Is Guy Pearce a long-time friend of Scotts?

Last & not least....Why oh why did the Director tease us with the Idris Elba/Charlize Theron scene? They should have SHOWN us what we wanted to see...I think everybody in that theatre last night was waiting for the Swirl scene...They have good chemistry but Idris has good Chemistry with every actor he's ever worked with...

If all goes well this weekend Charlize should be thrilled to have the #1 & #2 films in the Country...Go check it out Guys you'll love the suspense..

My take is that was intended to show the dawn of life on earth. The ship dropped off the engineer. The engineer drank the "formula" to plant the seed on earth. From there, evolution started.

I agree. A key character such as Weyland would have felt more genuine with an actual senior actor. It seems like they already had wanted Pearce to be in the cast but did not know what to do with him.

The movie certainly did not have enough R-rated material. There were no fuck scenes. There was no harsh language. The only reason it was rated R was the graphic med pod alien-ectomy scene, which was only put in to match the spaghetti dinner scene from Alien.

Re: Ridley Scott working on an 'Alien' prequel

I don't think you need to add in R rated fuck scenes just for the sake of an R rated movie. It should all relate to story.

I loved this film. It just blew my mind. It was an experience that I wanted from Avatar but didn't get.

I agree they should have gotten Michael Gambon or Tom Wilkinson to play Weyland though

True. But then again I never meant that. I meant that the movie did not have enough R rated material . . . to warrant the R rating that it got, which is not Scott's fault. Although if the story was able to incorporate sex into the movie in such a way that it helped develop the characters then I would not have objected. A couple of the characters were underdeveloped, especially Vickers, and could have used some more time in the script.
