I'm in Cleveland, hanging with a good friend. We went to a dance performance Saturday and toured the mall today. Santa was there but I wasn't sure what to ask him to bring you. Besides, I don't know if Cleveland Santa delivers across state lines...don't wanna cause problems.

The other night I was visiting the Venezuelan lady, and I found old episodes of Ozzie and Harriet in the queue. To tell you the truth, I had never watched the show before, ever. But there was an incident that happened many years ago, so I figured that I should at least check it out, and try to watch it as long as I could stand it.

The incident I'm referring to is that over 30 years ago, my MCC church did their own version of the Newlywed Game with couples from the congregation, and my ex and I were one of the couples. Some question came up about which couple we most resembled, with Ozzie and Harriet being one of the couples, and a couple of other sitcom couples whom I don't remember. Considering that I was completely unfamiliar with the show, it's no surprise that I missed the question.

Fast forward to the other night. I watched the show, and all I could think was that I'm nothing like Ozzie. Not even close. And my ex is nothing like Harriet. I don't know where that idea came from.

It turns out that I did have some familiarity with the younger boy from the show, Ricky Nelson. Of course he went on to have some teenybopper hits around the early 60s. But the 50s expectations bit him in the ass, when the adult Rick Nelson went on stage at Madison Square Garden, to sing his old hits during the 50s revival period. Wearing long hair and a beard, he got booed off the stage. People forget that at that time, the hippies, student demonstrators, anti- Vietnam War and counterculture generation was generating all kinds of hostility and backlash. Rick Nelson had a 1972 hit, "Garden Party," in which he sang about the incident. He went on to have a career as a singer doing the music he wanted to do, having escaped the 50s straitjacket.

You might want to check out the movie "Far From Heaven," which was done in the style of a 1950s melodrama, which provided a dystopian look at life back then. The housewife was unhappy because she couldn't connect with her husband, and didn't understand why. The husband, as we learn, is a closet homosexual, having anonymous encounters, shutting himself off from the world and everyone around him, and being totally miserable.

I haven't seen Far From Heaven, but have heard of it, John. Dennis Quaid plays the closeted husband, I believe. Years ago Oprah had Bill O'Reilly on her talk show to promote his book and he went on this whole spiel about how much better things were back in the 50's/early 60's (much like the Twitter meme). People love to romanticize the past as if little to no one experienced any struggles.

Hello from Utah! It's colder than I expected and traces of snow on the ground. And on the mountains.

I'm at a lovely Airbnb in South Salt Lake. It's a block from busy State Street and a 10-minute walk to the Trax light rail to downtown.

The Mormon Temple is under scaffolding! I'll explore downtown nore but that was visible from my Trax ride from the airport to here.

I’m okay, just late to bed again! :p:lol: I had a day in York, and it was very enjoyable. I spent too much on model trains again, but they are very good, and, hopefully, I will send you a couple of photo’s over the weekend. I also visited the National Railway Museum. I got to see what is called The Search Engine. It is full of books, memorabilia, and many railway documents, timetables, signalling diagrams etc., I could spend a whole day in there! ;)

Hi! Wednesday night was a good hockey game. With a 1-1 tie after two periods, Utah came alive in the third to win 4-1. Utah goalie Karel Vejmulka "Veggie" was star of the game.
And now a train picture! Trax light rail here in the Salt Lake Valley operates three lines, Blue, Green, and Red. I've been riding daily since I arrived.
