The guy I refer to as my "crazy uncle" ;) Ron Paul ....... better not be counted out

seems that he's in a statistical dead heat in Iowa with Romney & Newt - not too shabby for the old guy in the rocking chair drooling on himself and muttering crazy stuff ;)

he's the "godfather" of the tea party movement - the movement that so many here and on MSNBC ridicule ........ unfairly

Here's a quick snapshot of some of his core beliefs, hardly the stuff of your standard Repup:

1 - Gays can marry
2 - US foreign policy played a part in our being attacked on 911
3 - CUT defense spending LOADS
4 - Drugs should be decriminalized
5 - Israel ........ meh

In 2008 he got booed (a lot) during the primary season for espousing some/all of the above - now, not so much

good article from up north ....... never been to vancouver but would like to go ....... I believe canada is not "structurally" anything ;)

^ Ron Paul is just noise as far as the GOP power machine is concerned. They are keeping him effectively muzzled.

He is a distraction. A mere entertainment to convince the GOP'ers that there is some room for libertarian values while making sure that they never see the light of day when the policy platform is being constructed by the religious right and the oligarchs that actually own all of these candidates.

why so 24/7 cynical ?

doesn't it prevent u from enjoying life to the fullest?

perhaps republican voters like democratic voters ........

are tired of things like:
Wars we can't pay for
Laws that intrude too much into personal choice
Treating gays like 2nd class citizens

IMO, republican voters and dem voters have much more in common than they have differences

all want a better life - a present and a future
opportunities as good/better for their kids
etc.
the american dream if u will

and perhaps r realizing that govt. intervention not only intrudes but costs money

I think this is a shifting of republican positions on things once considered unshiftable

must scare the shit out of the higher ups

but it's critical to move the republican party from a past to future tense

just saying

Doctor Paul and Gov-Amb Huntsman would both be good choices for the GOP. Unfortunately, neither one will get the republican nomination. I would like to see it, but it is not going to happen for the 2012 race. The base embraces neither of them.

This isn't tortoise and the hare, he doesn't have a chance. There isn't enough support for a 3rd party and wont' be anytime soon as far as I can see. He is not against enough social issues for a majority of the Rep to embrace him.

The sad reality is that Ron is too old to win the Presidency. That was one of his key drawbacks the last time and obviously is even more of a drawback this time.

There are factors that come into play that simply are not fair. Age, Race, and Religion ... which as I feel is one of the major reasons why Christians simply will not vote for Romney. Is it right? Absolutely not. Is it reality? Unfortunately.

He is 76 years old, born August 20, 1935. Let's say he was elected, he would be sworn in at the age of 77. Being the President is an extremely stressful job. 4 years of that he would be 81.

People commented about Reagan being too old when he was elected at 69. People mentioned McCain as being too old when he ran at 71. Paul is too old to be President no matter what his credentials are. He's past that age.

No age, race and religion shouldn't matter, but it does. Would an atheist be elected President, or someone Jewish, Muslim, Hindu? Not likely. When Kennedy was running there was lots of talk about him being Catholic. Unfortunately a white heterosexual male Bible-thumping Protestant is only allowed to be President to many people. Same thing with race..... a lot of people don't care but unfortunately not everyone is color blind.

Let's have a gay, black / Native American, atheist woman with a limp run for President. As long as she / he can serve the people, not just corporations.

Once the primaries are about half over, he'll become invisible again.

No, not a limp -- a prosthetic leg that when she's angry she takes off and waves at the press.

If Paul is polling right along with the leaders, it would be great if he won a couple of primaries -- it would upset the Republican establishment.

I had no idea Paul was that old - he carries it well and speaks in a fashion that suggests younger

I think it's awesome and ironic that a man his age is the most "progressive" as it relates to social issues within the party

And I love his indignation/explanation of the idea of "cutting defense" being horseshit - that it's really "not raising defense"

that the military budgets are SOOOO bloated that they should be priority one for cutting and would not make us vulnerable

which is what the other drones are saying

Crazy Uncle Ron - love him

Since I don't fit into the left/right paradigm any longer (the false Republican vs Democrat fight) I can't say I would specifically vote for someone based on their party in which they belong to. I will say this however, I believe that Ron Paul is an honest man with not just good intentions but the right frame of mind. His heart is good and he is one of the very few who would be able to maybe do some good for this country.

It is true that most of our politicians are owned by an oligarchy but it really doesn't seem like Ron Paul is one of them who are being puppeted around. For the past 30 years, Ron has never flip flopped on his issues of debate. He has always been against the Federal Reserve banking system because he knew back then what it was doing to us financially and the evidence of the theft of destruction of our economy via the banking cartel is plain to see today.

For the longest time, the idea being force fed to everyone on mainstream media was that "It's too bad he can't win". They tried to ignore him as much as possible but now, it's getting hard to NOT notice, even for those asleep.

If I was completely sure that Ron Paul could actually help this busted world, he would be the guy I voted for. Overall, he seems genuine.

I think Dr. Ron Paul can take care of his health long enough to carry out 2 terms in the Presidential seat. He after all is still a certified doctor.

I wish he would win.

I'd love to see his naivete crushed once and for all when he has to sit behind the desk in the Oval Office and comes to the soul crushing realization that the destruction of the US federal government isn't on the agenda for the day.

Government intervention also saves lives, Chance.

Here's one question I'd want to ask you: Why were there not enough lifeboats on the Titanic?

I deem sensible regulation as an absolute necessity.

Gentlemen, I call this post my once-per-month trek into the Political Room. It was nice to see you all again.

well thanks for stopping by :)

me thinks u perhaps have grabbed this one-liner and "carpe diem" ;)

I also deem sensible regulation as a good thing

My point about Ron is just that his message, poo - poo'd just couple years ago seems to have caught on a bit even with staunch conservatives

as for the titanic ......... before my time

and the movie dare i say it ........ overrated ;)

come back more often - you're always welcome

Actually, your history on the Titanic is wrong. There were enough lifeboats on the Titanic for its patrons but the problem was that many of them were not disembarking at full capacity. When you have a lifeboat that holds 60 and leaves with 12, that means 48 people are left to cram into another boat or try to be rescued at sea.
