On the September 12th edition of "The View," in response to fellow co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s comments that since the attacks of September 11, 2001, America has not been attacked at home. “We have not been attacked,” she said. “We are on the offense here.”

Rosie O’Donnell, interrupted her and stated that "radical Christianity is just as threatening as radical Islam in a country like America."

The comedienne also attacked America’s response to 9/11:
O’Donnell: "We were attacked not by a nation. And as a result of the attack and the killing of nearly 3,000 innocent people, we invaded two countries and killed innocent people in their countries."

Rosie inquired as to whether anyone watched President Bush’s address to the nation. She then read from the speech:

O’Donnell: "He had one sentence that I thought struck me. I thought, what did everyone think? ‘The safety of America depends on the outcome of the battle in the streets of Baghdad.’ And I would say the outcome, really, of America really depends on the battle in the streets of New Orleans, that that city is still decimated and $303 billion have been spent fighting this war. If, literally, a third of that money was put into Katrina and facilitated with honest people who knew how to do it, we wouldn't be in the situation we're in."

(O’Donnell may be unaware of this, but $110 billion has been approved by Congress for the Gulf Coast clean-up. Isn't that at least a third?)

O’Donnell saved her harshest comments for the war on terror. After Hasselbeck mentioned the threat of extreme Islam, Rosie responded with her slap at Christianity:

O’Donnell: "Radical Christianity is just as threatening as radical Islam in a country like America."

This proved too much for even Behar. She replied, in a somewhat bewildered manner, "But.. but Christians are not threatening to kill us. There’s that difference. This group is threatening to kill us."

Hasselbeck also appeared surprised by O’Donnell’s comment. She maintained, "We are not bombing ourselves here in the country."

The comedienne had a clever retort for this:

O’Donnell: "No, but we are bombing innocent people in other countries. True or false?"

O’Donnell then added that Iraq and Afghanistan “never threatened to kill us.”
What?!?!? Earth to O’Donnell... The purpose of al Qaeda, a group interwoven into the ruling Taliban, is the destruction of the American way of life. In Iraq, on numerous occasions, Saddam Hussein threatened America.

There are two points to be made here. First, apparently Rosie believes that the federal government is a branch of "radical Christianity." Secondly, has she never heard of World War II and the innocent civilians that unfortunately died in the struggle against Nazism? Was that war wrong? Showing a loose grasp on international politics, O’Donnell stated that "Iraq and Afghanistan never threatened to kill us. Ever."

Again, perhaps Ms. O’Donnell is unaware of exactly where the Taliban trained and plotted. Afghanistan, with its Taliban leadership, was the training ground for al Qaeda — the group directly responsible for killing thousands of Americans. The Taliban sponsored, housed, and protected al Qaeda fighters and leaders. President Bush told the Taliban to turn over al Qaeda leaders or face the consequences. They refused and America took action against our attackers.

As for the difference between radical Christians and radical Islamists, a fundamentalist Christian feels the "love." A Muslim feels the "hate." If I were forced to make a choice, I would prefer the former to knock on my door to ask me to listen to his spiel, than to have the latter spill my blood because I'd refused to listen.

I also have never been afraid to board a plane with a bunch of Christians, whereas I WOULDN'T board a plane with a load of Muslims.

While a Christian might tell Rosie she's going to burn in hell for her lifestyle choice, a Muslim will do his best to send her here. Or is she ignorant of the fact that homosexuality is punishable by death under sharia law in islamic countries?

Just last week when former Iranian President Mohammed Khatami spoke at Harvard, he justified his country’s use of capital punishment for acts of homosexuality, but said that the conditions for execution are so strict that they are “virtually impossible to meet.”

“Homosexuality is a crime in Islam and crimes are punishable,” Khatami said. “And the fact that a crime could be punished by execution is debatable.”

The audience responded with silence to his remark.

Rosie has had the privilege of being a lesbian woman raising a son in America. Does she not realise how quickly she would be prosecuted, if not executed by radical Islamists for attempting to enjoy the same privilege?

Why hasn't Rosie said anything about that...?

Funny how she lives here and not in Saudi Arabia. There's nowhere in the Middle East she could have stood in a courthouse and waved after having a lesbian marriage--not for long anyways.
That's why we call them a 5th column.

She's just another big mouth who thinks the world is her pulpit for her extremist views.

Go Rosie!! Christian militants ARE tied to the White House, and significant damage has been done because of them. Almost 3,000 of our soldiers have been killed in this pointless war on Iraq, and at a bare minimum 25,000 Iraqis have been killed. She may not have had all her facts right, but her basic message is unfortunately way too true.

Well .. she may have been a little extreme ; BUT Rosie was making a point ... How many times have CHRISTIANS assulted gays and lesbians using religion as the reason for said assult ... ?
I'm not going to debate Foreign Policy ... BUT; I don't think we need to burn Rosie at the stake for trying to make a point .

If the radical right-wing christians, who are Bush's biggest backers, had their way, we would have been sent to the gas chambers by now. I wouldn't call that "christian" love. This country was established on the principle of separation of church and state. Yes, the radical right-wing christians would like to establish a theocracy, "a christian nation". Just like the radical muslims created their theocracies.

Re: Rosie O'Donnell: "Radical Christianity is just as threatening as radical Islam...

She's just another big mouth who thinks the world is her pulpit for her extremist views.

I, for one, am glad she spoke out.

She's absolutely correct...radical Christianity is as dangerous as radical Islamic fundamentalism.

Those who deny that must've slept through history class.

Anything radical is just unstable and bad (for a lack of a better word). Like Rosie said, radical Christianity and radical Islam are equally threatening; you could equate the Nazis with the Islamic Fundamentalists of some of the Mid-East countries and they would be equally cruel and evil.

However, I have to disagree with Rosie about Afghanistan. She said that we invaded 2 countries that were not threats. One could debate the validity of the Iraq war, but Afghanistan??? Come one!! It's so obvious that they were against us!! Afghanistan and its Taliban regime actively supported Al Qaeda. Rosie must get her facts straight.

I'm not going to be a "radical" and I will respect her opinion, though I disagree with parts of it, and celebrate our freedom of speech that many of the "radical" countries don't have.

Be thankful to be here....

Rosie is one of my least favorite people. She's vile, vulgar and very bitter towards people. While I respect her right to believe and say whatever she desires, I couldn't disagree with her more. She's a very bitter woman who uses her celebrity as a platform to voice her own extreme views of the world. Remember when she attacked Tom Selleck about guns on her show? Must she always provoke arguments? Personally, the "extreme Christians" she refers to that bomb abortion clinics are "extreme Christians" by title only. I personally don't consider anyone Christian who would murder women who want abortions. It's blatant hypocrisy and lunacy. But Miss O'Donnell, you're certainly entitled to your opinion.

There are so many celebrities who use their status to spout their views for the republicans and their warmongering views .... BUT; they and we are all entitled to out own opinions and You, Me, We .. have to respect that right ..

Remember when she attacked Tom Selleck about guns on her show?

Prior to what was considered an ambush attack, Rosie had specifically told Tom Selleck that she wouldn't talk about the NRA or guns. That was one of his conditions for his appearing on her show. Once he was in the chair and on camera, she berated him for his support of Charlton Heston's defense of the 4th amendment (the right to bear arms). She kept berating Tom so much, he became visibly disgusted, but he maintained his mature composure nonetheless. What was so strange, though, was that at the time, Rosie was the spokesperson for Kmart who was one of the largest sellers of guns and ammo.

However, a few weeks later, she had on her show the black rap artist / comedianne Queen Latifah, and when Queen Latifah started talking about how she carries a gun because, you know, that's just part of the culture of us people "in the hood." Rosie, instead of confronting her, simply smiled, laughed and went with the flow.

I agree with Rosie on the Radical Christianity.. Has anyone ever heard of The Reverend Fred Phelps.

I agree with Rosie on the Radical Christianity.. Has anyone ever heard of The Reverend Fred Phelps.

While "Reverend" Fred Phelps is certainly radical, I can assure you that there's not a Christian bone in his body. Speaking from personal experience, over the years, I have been shown more kindness and love by most of my Christian friends than even by members of my own family and even some of my gay friends...

Jesus reached out to those who were considered outcasts and society's "unwanteds" - tax collectors, prostitutes, beggars, the lame, the blind, lepers, and even murders. The Apostle Paul before his conversion was a persecutor of Christians, relentlessly tracking them down and murdering them before his encounter with Jesus on the Damascus Road. "Reverend" Fred Phelps no more represents a typical Christian, than the 9/11 hijackers represented a typical Muslim.

Stupid dyke. She makes us all look bad.

I agree. How did she go from a mediocre comedienne to an all-knowing authority on everything...? She's become a gruff, cantankerous, angry lesbian stereotype.

As for comparing Radical Christians and Radical Islamists, radical christians say that certain people are going to hell for stupid reasons and push to keep gay marriage illegal, while radical Islamists fly planes into buildings, blow up buildings and buses full of civilians, and decapitate journalists and civilian workers. Which sounds worse...?

Go Rosie! :gogirl: Go Rosie! :gogirl:

What she said is absolutely correct, like it or not.

Why all the anti-Rosie feelings? She does have a big mouth but she also tries to tell the truth as she sees it as well as live a truthful life.

Much of what she said is true. And I think her remarks about Radical Christianity are a response to the dangerous attempt of the Bush administration to manipulate the Fundamentalist Christian vote and to twist it into the fiber of politics. This is a major step towards fascism.....and that is a documented fact. Fascist governments use religion as a tool of manipulation. This has been done in the countries where Radical Muslims have been groomed and it is happening in this country in many of the Fundamental Christian movements.

Christians "feel the love." Yes, some do. However, there are many like Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell who are about "hate" not "love." For example, Robertson has said that a hurricane should wipe out Disneyland because they had a "gay friendly" day. That really expresses love. On his television show, he told a woman who had been raped that she should find the man who raped her, make him fall in love with her and marry him. Oral Roberts' "Send money or God is going to call me to heaven" wasn't about "feel the love" but "feel the money."

There is nothing more beautiful than a Christian who truly lives their religion. My grandmother was like that. I have some friends that are like that, too. But they don't preach their religion or even talk about it much. They live it.

Rosie went after Selleck because Selleck has been publicly outspoken in his support of the NRA. To my knowledge, Queen Latifah has not. Hence, there would be no need to challenge her.

Although she might overrun her mouth at times, Rosie tries to support causes she believes in and create events that help the community (her gay family cruises being an example.....even if they might possibly be a moneymaking thing).

Re: Rosie O'Donnell: "Radical Christianity is just as threatening as radical Islam...

She has a point, but she also said things that are false.

Canada joined the NATO mission in Afghanistan to help the Northern Alliance fight against the Taliban and to search out al-quaida members. As far as I know, the Northern Alliance was considered the ruling entity in Afghanistan, therefore it was not an invasion of the country as we fought alongside them to eliminate the Taliban. My country would not have joined the Afghani invasion if it was not justifyable, we are a nation of peacekeepers that only involves ourselves in UN peacekeeping operations and NATO missions.

Iraq, on the other hand, was an illegal invasion and she has every right to protest the murder of children and men and women in that country. Iraq is in far worse shape now than it was under that evil dictator - and that is disturbing. The way the US went into Iraq, and the way they handled the occupation was detrimental to the Iraqis, and it is clear that it was a mistake that has left our neighbours to the south with alot of blood on thier hands.

As for her religious comments, both Christian and Islamic religions have bloody histories... though Christians dont generally strap bombs to thier chests and blow up buses and markets in the name of thier religion. I am not generalizing the entire religion, I am merely saying that most murders done in the name of religion in these times tend to be extremist Islamic groups rather than extremist Christian groups. However, she is correct in being worried about allowing far right Christians in government. Conservative Christians are a threat to society in a way, they attempt to reverse progressive policies in developed nations... and the best hope we have in creating a more peaceful and safe world is to have progressive political groups control the government (imo). Phelps is in the minority amongst christians, I do not know why his hate websites are still on the internet, and I do not know why the american government has not arrested him... he is wanted in Canada for hate crimes... my guess is its ok in the US to commit hate crimes?

I've never been much of Rosie O'Donnell fan so I don't have much to offer here. However, from the little I've read and seen of her, she does appear to serve as a counterweight to the more nutty right wing Christian conservatives ..... so she can't be all that bad. ..|
