I'm not sure if this is in the right place but is there any meanings behind those rubber wristbands I see guys wearing all over my college campus?

It's messing around with my gaydar because I heard there's some kind of sexual meaning behind them (at least that's what everyone said back in high school)

Some guys were two wristbands of different colors and that really drives me crazy. I'm probably over analyzing again. What's the deal with them?

They tend to have meanings in and of themselves, but unless you happen to know for a fact what one means, it's not much help. The yellow ones, for instance, almost certainly means the Lance Armstrong cancer foundation. It may mean they're fighting cancer, someone they love is fighting cancer, or they just support the cause.

The rainbow ones almost certainly mean the wearer is gay. After that, you're on your own. Best bet - ask. "That's a cool bracelet. Does the color mean anything?"

Lex

Well, in coming out and relationships, they don't really have any meaning at all...just like earings.

But every one has some sort of very special meaning to the person wearing it and if you can't find the meaning of every colour on Google, then use this as an ice breaker. Just tell the guy that you like his bracelet and ask him what it means.

Who knows, you might be hitting the sheets in record time with some of the guys flaunting them.

yea i have been wearing the same one since my 10th grade year i wear it because my mom bought it for me down in Florida

Thanks Lex, those cancer bracelets are very common. Good to know finally know the meaning behind it.

rareboy, it would be great if the bracelets could be my generations earing, then it would be so easy. I'll research on Google because I'm interested to know what the other colors mean.

Good ideas for the icebreakers.

I know of those thin sex bracelets having a meaning behind the different colors, but I don't know of the bracelets you're talking about having any sexual meaning.

there are red ones which symolizes Aids, and those who have it.

Yes, though I have also heard that the bracelets have replaced the hanky code, which would make red the colour for fisting.

It's all terribly confusing, so I've decided to see them as nothing more than decoration. Unless a guy's wearing a rainbow one, of course.

My mom once asked my older brother if his meant that he was in a gang. I had to laugh at that one. :D

Hey! if every colour was related to some sexual orientation or behaviour, we'd be in heaven! wouldn't we? But let's face it: if it was like that, it'd have been published in every single media already. So I don't think the wristbands mean anything special.

However, one "fad" about rubber bands you may be alluding to is...

This usually symbolizes how many people/tricks they had sex with. Best to stay away from those people imo.

Just looking on line regarding the colors, however most of them will have writting on it supporting whatever cause.

Red - AIDS but also Diabetes
Purple - Alzheimer's
Orange - Children Diabetes
Blue - Colon Cancer
Gray - lung cancer

I give up...lot of colors represent different causes.

In regards to sexual, here is what I found.

Yeah, I got that, too. I used to wear three or four.. just as decoration, but apparently in some parts of town, it's gang affiliation.

and since it might mean more than that, i'd rather not wear them at all. geez.

I used to have a pink one for breast cancer. I paid a dollar and the girl told me to give it to my mother or girlfriend, presumably because it was pink. The men's rights fighter in me made me just wear it myself.

So-called "sex bracelets" were a fad when I was in middle school. You got them for a quarter out of a machine at the exit of the grocery store, and they supposedly told you how far a girl was willing to go, but no one could agree on what color meant what so I don't think anyone actually ever used it.

Here it is on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_bracelet#urban_legend

So what's up with this thing about earrings? I've never heard of it.

Hey erobert,

Sorry its taken a while to get to this but I'm going to shift your thread to Hot Topics... its a far bigger audience over there and I'm sure you might get some more ideas on what these bands "hidden" meanings are if there are any.

Good luck!

wow, if light blue means anything, i'm going to be so upset at my college for putting their name on it and not telling me it represents some kink or cancer...

i think the real "meaning" of them is generally in the words that are stamped into them. every one i've ever seen has had text, anyway.

Between Lex and Ghost of Molten Rock you've got your answer. Initially they were brought about to acknowledge charitable causes. I believe Lance's organization was the start of it. It's an easier way than the ribbons that have traditionally been used. And then it became a fad. The original intent was lost. Now they hold little to meaning at all and are more akin to the tracking tags used on livestock.

I always thought it's for fundraising. By buying one, you donate some of that money to the organizations they stand for.

wow, i guess i'm really drunk right now. I thought you were talking about wastebands!

those wristbands are nothing but commercial bullshit. Anyone with a cause can have a thousand of them made for $100 and sell them for $2 each in the name of one charity or another.
