I was at the NY Yankee game last night and during the 7th inning stretch they have a moment of silence for the men and woman serving in the armed forces. After the moment of silence they play "God Bless America".Two rows ahead of me was a women who sat and did not get up, people started giving her a hard time and she said she was not American, and gave a few people the finger. I know it was not the "National Athem" but personality I wound stand and respect the counrty I was in. I felt she was being rude, just wanted to see what the rest of you think. [-X

If you're in someone else's living room, house, country - it's only common decency to act respectfully - some people just lack dignity and manner's - dragged up, rather than brought up.

Agreed, although I wouldn't have made as big a deal of it as the Yankee fans did. But, seeing as they're Yankee fans..... ;)

I agree..

No matter what your feelings are on the war, it was very dis-respectfull to our service people and the US..Shame on her

I would have to agree with Elvin. She is entitled to her opinion. The First Ammendment to the United States Constitution states:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." Simply put, you have the right to support the military or participate in these types of displays, but this lady also has the right not to participate.
Sorry, for the rant but I feel really strongly about this subject.

I have to agree....you do have a point..
Thanks

I probably would've caved to the peer pressure, but I wouldn't've liked it even one bit. For one, I do not believe in God. Also, I have no feeling whatsoever with God Bless America, since I'm not American. As far as I'm concerned she was in her right to do what she did (or did not do).

If I were in an American school, I would not pledge allegiance to the flag either. I would not participate in prayer (though I would shut up, obviously). As far as I see it, it's a right to choose. The woman made her choice, it did not hurt anyone (the people who did feel hurt should take off the blindfold and look at the world around them - there's so much beauty and diversity they're missing) and she was not stopping others from making their choice and acting on it. No harm, no foul.

somewhat fascist and scary if you ask me

maybe this is how all those germans learned to do that heil hitler thing in unison

I think you might be over-simplifying.

The Germans were also facing enormous economic/political problems, looking to blame problems on different social groups, and desperate for a charismatic leader. Doesn't sound like anything going on here in the good ole US of A.

When in Rome...

I wouldn't expect her to sing, nor pledge her allegiance. But stand with the others.

I do when I'm abroad, but then again I usually harbour some respect for the country I am in.

The only thing she did that was rude was to give the finger. The crowd should have respected her right not to stand. I would have stood up for her (no pun intended).

I think she did the right thing, and if I was there I'd have told her and everyone else that I thought so.

I was born American, and the idea of patriotism is more than just alien to me, it's ridiculous. I never chose to be American, it's nothing to be proud of, and just because synchronicity had me born here doesn't make me better than anyone else.

The only people who have any right to patriotism are immigrants, those we left their old countries to come here. At least they wanted to be American, instead of being so accidentally.

I intend to move somewhere much more Socialist as soon as I can, mayhaps the Netherlands or Canada. Perhaps then I'll feel patriotic, but it'll be about my new country.

I wouldn't have given her the slightest bit of attention, since that's obviously what she wanted.

right on elvin! we americans only believe in individual rights only when it's convenient...i wouldn't have stood up either...i'm not in the mood to sing "god bless america" when i actually hope he curses it.
