Brendan Burke, Gay Son of Toronto Maple Leafs Manager, Killed in Car Accident Today

PLEASE BE CAREFUL ON THE ROADS!

To those who don't know, Brendan Burke was the son of Brian Burke, manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was killed driving in the snowstorm on Friday night on the U.S. 35 after a Leafs game in NJ.

Brendan Burke was a pioneer of gay rights and gay acceptance in mainstream culture as he came out to the team and his family to combat rampant homophobia in the hockey world.

He will be sorely missed.

The other person in the vehicle with Brendan was 18 year old Mark A. Reedy, 18, a Freshmen at Michigan State University. He was on that school's volleyball team and in high school in Bloomfield Hills, MI was on the swim team.

I was really shocked to read this this morning. I was really moved by his whole coming out story. Truly is a very sad moment.

How terribly sad. Sincere sympathy to the families of Brendan and Mark.

All that could have been for this talented and courageous young man has been taken away but in his short 21 years he accomplished more than many people do in a lifetime by prying open the closet doors in the world of hockey. Thank you Brendan.
 
I woke up and read this on the main page of the newspaper, so friggen sad. Such a great guy, a great story. I feel for his father and his family.

So shocked...
