Sarah Palin still doesn't know what the VP does.

Re: Sarah Palin still doesn't know what the VP doe

Actually Jasun your wrong, I suggest you take a look here...

http://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/common/briefing/President_Pro_Tempore.htm

The entire point of the position of President Pro Tempore -"The Constitution provides for a president pro tempore to preside over the Senate in the absence of the vice president. "

So perhaps she's a bit more informed than you or Olberman...are willing to give her credit for

Re: Sarah Palin still doesn't know what the VP doe

She'll be locked out of the Senate hall before ANYBODY (especially Clinton and pals) allow her to dip her feet into the pools of legislative waters. If she thinks she's an outsider now, wait until she becomes VP, heaven forbid.
Can you say culture shock?

They can't lock her out of the Senate -- she'd be its president.

You need to read the Constitution. The VP is in place to become President if the President can no longer complete his term. Or to vote to break a tie. He does not meet with other Senators to make policy changes.

The president of an assembly can meet with members for any number of purposes: to mediate, referee, persuade, or whatever. Palin is being very optimistic about whether any senators would actually pay attention, but since she'd also be the president's voice there, she would have substantial persuasive power.

While those may not be specified duties, they may legitimately be described as part of the job.

Unfortunately for that description -- including the bits specified by the Constitution -- it isn't likely that the next Veep will be called on to break a tie vote, much less be welcomed as a partner in policy discussions. If Palin should be elected, she'd probably be smart to leave things to the president pro tem, and make herself scarce.

Sounds more like a continuation of the Bush administration to try to make more and more POWERGRABS.

As President of the Senate (Article I, Section 3), the vice president oversees procedural matters and may cast a tie-breaking vote. There is a strong convention within the U.S. Senate that the vice president not use his or her position as President of the Senate to influence the passage of legislation or act in a partisan manner, except in the case of breaking tie votes.

Re: Sarah Palin still doesn't know what the VP doe

I'm not sure how much longer it's going to be funny when people desperatly try to come up with reasons why Sarah palin isn't an idiot who doesn't know what she's talking about.

They post all this hair-splitting, brain numbing stuff that tries to say things like... If you look at it from this angle.... And close one eye and hum... She's right.

She's not.

The vice president is not in charge of the senate. No amount of saying "yeah but..." is going to change that.

The Veep is the Senate's presiding officer. Until Tricky Dick Nixon, that was a full-time job, and came with staff paid for out of the legislative budget.

In terms of parliamentary rules of order, the vice president is the chair of the Senate, with all the authority and privileges pertaining thereunto. The vice president is thus expected to be in attendance, and to, well, preside.

A chairman, though, is expected to stay neutral. That kind of rules out much of any policy-making/changing role.

So Palin has her info right -- except she's conflating being presiding officer with being the representative of the President. So her real error is that she's mixing official duties -- i.e. presiding officer of the Senate -- with non-official -- i.e. speaking for the president.

So she's got the job right... except: she's doing a Cheney, mixing executive with legislative. That's a worse error, people.

That fits with the role of a chair per Robert's Rules of Order. And it illustrates what I said: Palin's real error is in wanting to have both things at once, which is to say, mixing powers under the Constitution. She would be "in charge" of the Senate, and she could meet with senators -- but she'd bloody well better learn the difference between her two roles and be clear which hat she's wearing at any given time.

I'm not certain she has it in her to be sufficiently non-partisan to carry it off.

Your points in this thread are well made but I remind that Palin was responding to the question of a third grader with a fifteen second answer. I think expecting her to be precise about every qualifier and detail is being a bit picky.

>>>I'm not sure how much longer it's going to be funny when people desperatly try to come up with reasons why Sarah palin isn't an idiot who doesn't know what she's talking about.

There's a sort of fundamental flaw in the way that many Americans view their representatives.

One of the basic principles of American school of thought is "all men (and women) are created equal". That's fine as far as basic rights go, but it certainly doesn't mean that we're all the same. If so, it wouldn't matter who performed heart surgery on you. But it DOES matter. You're going to want a surgeon who has the book larnin', and enough experience that he's gotten extremely good at heart surgery.

But this doesn't seem to apply when it comes to politics. The longer a person is a politician, the more America seems to mistrust him. We start saying he's "out of touch with America", and we use one of my favorite terms - "career politician". Like that's a bad thing. Why shouldn't someone be a career politician? Being a good politician takes a particular skill set. One I don't have. And as politicians get used to arguing and compromising and all the other BS that politicians do, they tend to get better at it.

But as Americans, we tend to mistrust anybody who has experience. We bandy about words like "Washington insider", and we feel government would be better with more of "us" in there. And I think that's Palin's appeal. She's "one of us". To Jo6P, so what if she doesn't know really what her job will be - Joe don't know, neither. She says good things about America, she's kinda purty, and she's one of us. So why wouldn't he vote for her?

Re: Sarah Palin still doesn't know what the VP doe

I think it's hysterical the way that conservatives are still defending that twit. She's ruined their chances of ever being taken seriously in this election, she's proven that corruption isn't a problem for them... I mean, she's proven just about every negative stereotype about conservatives and they're still not only defending her, they're planning her run for president in 4 years.

I'm glad they are... she's so hated by the majority of America that she'll ensure we get some smarter people elected than we've had for a while.

I can see this now:

Presenting Hillary "48% of Americans will never vote for me" Clinton, vs. Sarah "My favorable rating is lower than Hillary's" Palin.

Re: Sarah Palin still doesn't know what the VP doe

Perhaps what this teaches us is that we've learned to settle for less, we value style over substance, we're going backwards in time to the days where we vote for people just for looking like us and (acting like) they have the same values.

.

Interesting that you should say that, given that Obama is the epitome of style over substance. You might even call him a poster boy for style over substance.

Re: Sarah Palin still doesn't know what the VP doe

Obama has plenty of substance but you usually offer one of the more imbalanced, one-extreme-or-the-other perspectives so it's not surprising that you'd discredit his work in Chicago and at Harvard.

Obama could have all the substance in the world but since you're not supporting him it's unlikely that you'd acknowledge that. Sorry, when I was growing up we were taught that the sportsman-like thing to do is acknowledge your opponent's skills, not pretend like they're a bunch of talentless hacks that don't even deserve to be on the same court/field.

What Obama may or may not have done at Harvard is hardly relevant.
From the record, it would appear that he was a rabble-rouser in Chicago, which is hardly an activity of which one can be proud.

FYI, I'm perfectly willing to acknowledge an opponent's skills, if any skills there be. So far, I haven't seen any.

Re: Sarah Palin still doesn't know what the VP doe

^ Fortunately, many people, including many voters have.

Re: Sarah Palin still doesn't know what the VP doe

She also thinks new hampshire is in the great northwest.

Yeah yeah yeah.

And Obama claimed he'd been to 57 states and has "one left to go."

These silly attacks on Governor Palin --and they're almost all silly-- just show up Obama supporters as petty and more interested in distractions than substance.

Re: Sarah Palin still doesn't know what the VP doe

^ So you show that by making a silly and petty attack on Obama. Funny.

Your bias twists what you see and you miss the point again.

I didn't attack Obama.

I pointed out that he, like Palin, makes silly mistakes that don't mean anything.

Re: Sarah Palin still doesn't know what the VP doe

But not knowing what the VP does isn't just a brain fart. It's ignorance. Very different thing.

Wow I'm suprised that youre still sticking to that despite the fact that what she said is in fact part of the role of the VP, and was responding in a manner to speak to 3rd graders. Kudos to you Jasun for being wrong and sticking to it.

Re: Sarah Palin still doesn't know what the VP doe

It's interesting that the founding fathers used the same term for VP as they did for the leader of thier country, in fact the US Senate created a position "President Pro Tempore" to preside over the Senate when the VP is not present. The only difference is that the VP can only vote in the event of a tie.

But hey you keep dancing in your wrong circle...

Yah, style over substance! If you would bother to look beyond 20-30 second soundbites by the right wing wackos, you would probably(well probably not)have a different view. As an example, have you even watched the full 5+ minute video of Obama talking to Joe the Plumber? Kinda,no wait, not kinda, IT DOES PUT YOUR STYLE OVER SUBSTANCE WHINE TO REST!

Re: Sarah Palin still doesn't know what the VP doe

Ok you obvoisly just want to let your blind hatred of this woman take over so I'll spell it out for you...

Taken directly from the US Senate website...

"Other than to succeed to the presidency upon the death or resignation of a president, a vice president's only constitutional duty is to preside over the Senate."

oh and here's a link as well just so you know I'm not making this up.

http://www.senate.gov/general/Features/Part_1_VP.htm

Now lets take a look at what Merriam-Webster has to say about the word "preside"

pre·side Pronunciation: \pri-ˈzīd\ Function: intransitive verb Inflected Form(s): pre·sid·ed; pre·sid·ing Etymology: Latin praesidēre to guard, preside over, from prae- + sedēre to sit — more at sit Date: 1608 1: to exercise guidance, direction, or control
2 a: to occupy the place of authority : act as president, chairman, or moderator b: to occupy a position similar to that of a president or chairman3: to occupy a position of featured instrumental performer —usually used with at<presided at the organ>

Oh and a link for that too...
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/preside

Hmmm...I'm not the one that says the VP is "in charge" of the Senate, the US Senate is saying it
