Sarah Palin's Daughter Uses Homophobic Slurs

Oh, here we go... Another topic hijacking, self-righteous diatribe about how gays who don't respond in the gay-approved manner are this or that.

Speak for your damn self. I, for one, am not going to start being bothered by something that doesn't bother me all because it bothers you.

And you have every right not to be bothered by something. And should someone gay bash you I'm sure you'll understand when it doesn't bother any of us that it happens.:p:p:p

Hey, not a problem. That only highlights my point. We want to fight and stand up and seek the approval of straight people who are ignorant and homophobic... but then turn around and say some bullshit like that to another gay person because they don't share your opinion.

There's a difference between fighting for equality and fighting for acceptance and approval. I don't need to be accepted by bigots and I don't seek the approval of ignoramuses.

@Tavares: if you don't mind my asking, are you African-American?

<thinking>

I don't know how to articulate what I'm thinking, but I believe there might be a cultural barrier at work.

With a name like JohannBessler and a blog entry entitled British Wartime Rations... I'd love to see what you have to say about African-American cultural barriers. :)

geez.....grow some skin. people will always say things we don't approve of. doesn't mean we should take away their right to say what they wanna. say.

GROW SOME SKIN PEOPLE!!!!!! Quit being such whiney little babies.

Uh, how are we taking away her right to say it? Are we suing her? She called us out. We're responding. It goes both ways.

I'm sure you would call those "uppity Negros", "whiney little babies", if they got bent out of shape about someone using the "N word".

Hypocrite.

so now I'm a "hypocrite" for saying something I didn't even say?

genious!

what a genious you are.
LOL!

You're blowing this out of proportion. She's a 16 year old who is defending her family. Kids routinely call each other "faggots." I'm not saying it's right, but to make a post here as if she's some gay bashing person who's going around saying "slurs" is a stretch.

Oddly enough, I liked the exchange. There was something funny and satisfying in seeing a kid vent like that to defend her family. When I was 16 I think I said and did worse.

Cut the cunt some slack.

That, dear poster, is the point. She is reinforcing a societal norm among teens that is at best hurtful and, at worst, destructive and dangerous. Does she have the right to use that language? The First Amendment guarantees we all do. But is that kind of discourse parents should be accepting or even encouraging? Only a person with no moral or ethical compass would say so.

:( Can you take it, Tavares? I don't want to offend anyone. Heaven knows I'd done enough of that already.

I'd always been a flaky liberal hippy, who thought we were all the same under the skin, and so on.

But I began noticing some subtle differences between Anglo-American culture and African-American culture early on.

Can I take it? Better question is, can you take me challenging your opinion if I disagree with it? If so, say it. What you will say will fall into either one of two categories: Insightful or Ignorant. I know how to process both opinions respectively.

Bottom line, it's NOT acceptable what she said and those who are saying it's no big deal, that all kids use it etc are flat out WRONG.
That's the logic many of the GLBT youth who have been bullied have to hear. That being called a faggot is really no big deal and that everyone does it. That they just need to develop thicker skin and deal with being called a faggot, an abonomation, worthless etc.
It IS a big deal. It is a cruel slur that singles out a group of people and seeks to demean them. If she had singled out any group other than Muslims, she would have been ripped to shreds instead of people defending or playing down what she did.

Fine. So what do you propose "we" do? Instead of chastising people who don't view this in the same tragic way you do, WHAT DO YOU PROPOSE WE DO?!

I'm a grown man in my 30s. She's a fuckin 16 year old girl who can't even VOTE yet, however I'm supposed to give her words the power to affect my life negatively? She doesn't even have the power to put her mother into office.

I swear, some of y'all need to start putting things into proper perspective.

It's the fact that Palin goes on as if she raises the perfect family, and one of her kids gets knocked up in her teens and the other spews hate-speech over the internet. That's why she and her family need to be called out for their hypocrisy.

@Tavares: you see, there are two African-American men in this room who don't think this issue is a big deal.

Let me backtrack, and I'll explain my earlier post from the viewpoint of sociology.

African-Americans are rather like the British, in that there's a tradition of "taking the piss" out of each other; AAs used to call it "dissin'". Trading verbal insults in these two cultures is seen as quite normal.

Anglo-American culture evolved quite differently. We were taught from the time we were little not to say anything that would hurt anybody's feelings.

So the various groups would see this Palin incident completely differently. It seems terrible to an Anglo-American, but as of yet, at least two African-Americans in this thread have already stated that they don't see what the problem is.

I believe that this is because of the aforementioned culture barrier.

Tavares, good.

That incident alone shows you how two cultures can see the same exact thing completely differently.

I suggest to you that this Palin incident is similar.

I understand your train of thought, and I don't disagree...

However...

I'm coming at this, not from the perspective of Tavares the black person who grew up "hanging" people while doing "the dozens" at the bus stop, but simply as Tavares the Resident Nipple Inspector who could care less what some insignificant twerp says. I've been called names by other queers on this forum, such as an over the hell nipple freak. Someone in this very thread even said people wouldn't bother to care if I was gay bashed. I simply don't have the energy, quite honestly, to fight each and every negative thing every ignorant, hateful son of a bitch says. I know who I am and where I am in everything that is said about me. If I'm not in it, I don't claim it, therefore it simply doesn't affect me. It's not a black thing. It's a me thing.

You're blowing this out of proportion. She's a 16 year old who is defending her family. . .When I was 16 I think I said and did worse.

Cut the cunt some slack.

I think most of us are really criticizing her parents, especially her mother. That a huge national public figure has a child speaking like this really says a bunch about how Sarah raised her children, and thus a bunch how Sarah actually lives when not in the media spotlight.

:)

The main thing the OP wanted us to know, I think, is that someone who is hinting at a Presidential candidacy, has a daughter who posts openly homophobic remarks on a public forum.

This leads us to believe that Palin as President would be a nightmare for us gay folks, if she were to be elected. (I don't think she'll be too friendly to the black cause, either.)

It's something we all have to think about when 2012 rolls around.

BTW, what's ""hanging" people while doing "the dozens" at the bus stop," mean? I honestly don't know.

I can see Tavares' point about not giving insignificant people power through the use of their words. But that's the only thing I agree with that he says.

To NOT respond is the same as silently way of endorsing the behavior. I think the behavior is particularly important because of who Sarah Palin CLAIMS she is, and the type of family she CLAIMS to have. That, of course, was partly proven false by parading Levi Johnston around until he served no purpose. I think Sarah Palin is a very dangerous person because she is nothing she portrays herself to be. And she certainly isn't smart, or as Lisa Murkowski says, she is not "intellectually curious." She has accomplished what she has through dumbing down the conversation - through mud slinging and taking things to the LOWEST common denominator, something her daughters seem to be doing as well.

I would never say those things to someone, and I can't ever imagine my family letting me talk to anyone like that. So yeah, I care when people throw around the faggot word - we ALL should.

You are proof that gays are their own worst enemy. Keep throwing yourself under the bus dear for these idiots. The reason why people think it's okay to throw around the word "faggot", is because gays don't speak up. This is what keeps us to the back of the bus, so to speak. These people don't respect us at all. They will continue to work effortlessly do keep us from having any rights.

This shit has got to stop!

Ummm....no. You're TOOOOOO sensitive.

get over it. really. It's a kid that is, uh SHOCK, acting like a kid.
Yeah, I'm sure you'd use this line if she was throwing around the "N word" too.
