The idea of countries being basically full of good people but being fucked up by an evil government or a "controlling man" is one of the most dangerous idiotically naive ideas in the world.
As simplistic as it may be itself, the commonplace that every country has the government they deserve is closer to a more lucid take on politics and nationals.

Not only the few people constituting a government will do absolutely whatever they want to do if they just have the power and not enough opposition from the rest of the country, but all the other people under their power will consider everything they do acceptable or normal, or will simply feel that they don't have enough power to oppose and change things, and they ultimately will proudly rather side with their country and oppose other countries, without taking care of ideas, like justice or well-being. Freedom is not something you can offer out of the blue to a nation that has not developed that concept, and whose fundamental set of ideas has never related to that concept. In fact, "freedom" is not fully developed in the whole Western world, not even in its Anglo core, so you can make other nations ACT like free nations, but not THINK like them, just like you can train monkeys to act and APPEAR as going to vote under certain verbal command, but you can't expect them to have a sound political mind.

But in the case of Islamic countries, it IS about ideas, those being instilled by Islam. Islamic nations are Islamic before being nations, when there is a strong idea of nation at all, given that the nations and its frontiers have more often than not been created rather arbitrarily by Western nations according to their own vision of politics and the world.

Anyway, I've spent over 10 years in Saudi Arabia. It isn't gay heaven. But to be honest, its much better than how you guys perceive it. Sometimes you just have to try something instead of just taking the word of other people for it.

My dad's company has an employee only community, which is basically an entire city... and they have several of these all over the country. These places do not exercise the same strict religious rules the rest of the country follows. Women are driving there, and walking without abayas, and such.

I studied in an American school in Saudi Arabia. So for 8 hours a day we would be without the local laws and stuff, and then live in that community, so pretty much not involved much with the laws of the rest of the country.

But yes, the country does have problems. But so does every country out there. At this point I feel sorry for the women of Saudi Arabia more than the gays.
