So a man who killed two 15 year old schoolgirls 30 years ago is about to get out of prison, the parole board is letting him out, i guess he's learned his lesson and deserves a second chance, no i don't really, i'd lock him up til death came for him.

Do you believe serious criminals can be rehabilitated or is the murderous impulse always there ?

Certain crimes are going to mark you for life, even if you've served time.

Just my opinion. I believe that criminals can sometimes be rehabilitated, but that it isn't likely to happen.

Colin Pitchfork is way more than 'just' a murderer. He is only 61 and should still be considered a major danger to girls/women
For many crimes rehabilitation is not an option. Look at the Fishmonger Hall terrorist. He was deemed 'cured'

Throw away the key. People can't change and theres really no incentive to. People who think the purpose of our inhumane for-profit prison system is rehabilitation are expressing a profoundly deep lack of understanding of numerous intersectional problems. As an inescapable truth, prisons as they are destroy the human mind and once a person gets sucked into that vaccuum (mostly only black people though ..| ) theres little to no hope of a decent human being walking out. Their criminality becomes a self-perpetuating cycle.

Great topic Cormac! Thanks for sharing. :gogirl:

In theory? They can. Within our current system rehabilittion isn't even the goal, the goal is $$$

It would defeat the whole purpose of the sentencing system if every murderer was kept in prison until they died when the law provides a range of options. In the UK, the most serious offenders are given a "whole life tariff" and others are set a minimum term. In the case of Colin Pitchfork, the minimum term was set at 28 years on appeal and that period has expired. I don't have a view about his potential release, other than to say that it should be decided by professionals rather than by the tabloid press or members of the victims' families.

I assume your prison system isn't for-profit? I'm kinda jealous.

There are a few privately run prisons, but essentially the prison service is state run. Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons independently reviews all prisons and similar institutions.

If this person poses any threat to others he should never get out.

Germany also has a system for rehabilitation that seems to work.
I'm not in favor of the attitude "dangerous for life," and more than I am in favor of entitling someone 'racist for life.' (And I mean, the hateful, would-be-glad-to-hang-you type). Some people change. Some do not.

Here in the US, we read a headline and actually think we know everything there is to know. But we don't. Not even close. We can barely maintain a ciivilized veneer towards each other these days. Where does out "justification" come from?

So, I think letting other countries make decisions for those incarcerated is the best policy.

Given how many in our country never even end up behind bars, for some truly heinous crimes, we have quite a ways to go ourselves.

I hope people remake these old classic songs.
They are very good and catchy to listen to. Reminiscence' means sharing life experiences, memories and stories from the past. Typically, a person with dementia is more able to recall things from many years ago than recent memories, so reminiscence draws on this strength.

Americans seems more ''innocent'' back then but now looks guilty ... according to this video :lol:
