Yeah, it will be interesting to go back in the closet. But it seems I won't have to really, just can't confirm I am.Sorry, you got a pamphlet in the post and an hour later you're ready to join the navy? I can't fathom that but hey, to each their own.
If you join enjoy I suppose. I couldn't go back into the closet for anyone or any government. Not after having been out.
Why don't you wait for DADT to be repealed?
My life can't wait for DADT to be repealed. Why don't you wait for DADT to be repealed?
Yeah me and Mazda have had a good convo on life in the Navy and all that, and I am planning on going the Navy way. Monday I start working out to get back in shape, and studying for the ASVAB.I'd encourage you to join the Navy..
Myself,I spent a few years in the Army, and regret not waiting until I was 18 to join the Navy..When I was 17 ,that 6 months may as well been 5 years..Oh well.
From what I've seen the Navy is the way to go.Mazdaboi personally gave me a tour of his base, and belive me man,I was really impressed.Sure beats living in a tank.
The Air Force seems laid back, but my God , they sure do send you to some bum fuck places. How do you feel about 2 years in North Dakota? I couldn't do it. Then again, you could end up at a cool base in Europe..
Listen to Mazdaboi. He really knows his shit about the Navy, and it's been very good to him.
If I could go back, I'd enlist in the Navy in a second!
Oh wow, thank you for the link, I will definitely check it out.Hey, Apollo, last year PBS broadcast a very indepth program about serving on an air carrier in the Navy. The program showed what being in the Navy is like from an officer's point of view and from an enlisted person's point of view.
Since Justusboys won't let me post the links, I'll send them via private email. They'll take you to the Carrier website where you can watch all ten episodes of the series.
Brief program description:
CARRIER, a 10-part series filmed aboard the USS Nimitz, is a character-driven immersion in the high- stakes world of a nuclear aircraft carrier. The episodes follow a core group of characters as they navigate their jobs, families, faith, patriotism, love, the rites of passage and the war on terror.
As much as I agree DADT is a real nuisance, I think he can still serve our country in uniform.
It depends on how much you're committed towards it. My friends at the Great Lakes Naval Base in Lake County, IL told me most people are fine with gays in the armed forces, however you still need to be hush hush about it.
I say good for you for wanting to serve our country. I'm thinking about it myself.
I'd probably be sent there if I joined the army or marines. But with what I want to do, I wouldn't really be put in either countries.Have fun in Afghanistan or Iraq.
The USAF is just a lot easier than the other services, the quality of life is better (better quarters, better food). I lived at Hickam AFB which is directly adjacent to Pearl Harbor and so I met a lot of Navy there, and no offense to my brother Seamen but there was just no comparison.
Every Air Force base is like an airport, so you job is basically whatever you'd find at an airport. Airplanes are very technical, which is why the USAF goes for a...higher quality of recruit. The people you're arund are generally a little smarter, a little cleaner, a little more open-minded and so on.
In the other services they're all about obeying orders and doing what your told, because if you're going to get a seaman to scrape the bilge out of the bottom of the ship, the only way you're going to get him to do it is by making him do it. Whereas in the USAF you're not scraping up crap, you're doing something that requires your brain so it's waaaay more relaxed.
It'd for this reason that the benefits that the USAF gets are less. You'll make more $$ in bonuses going to another service, and get more money for your GI bill, because they have to bribe you. In the USAF, your cushier lifestyle IS the bribe.
USAF is more like an office job, more white collar, whereas the others are more blue collar.
Now before I get jumped on, there are very intellectual, officey jobs in the other services, and I have met many many fine and outstanding examples of humanity in all the services. Yes, there are some very technical and complicated things to run on a ship...but at some point you're still gonna be swabbing a deck or scraping the bilge from the bottom of the ship. Not so much in the USAF.
Oh yeah, and if you're in the USAF you are by definition going to be on an Air Force base, which means that you'll have easy access to free flights anywhere in the world. You get those no matter what service you're in, but you have to get to an air force base so it's a pain in the ass. And those flights are space-available, which means that if you have to come back the next day...well its a lot easier if your barracks are just 10 minutes away from the airport.
Mind you, this is all if you're looking for an easy life...I wish I'd joined the marines.
I don't plan on being open with it. I mean, I am not gonna lie and be all "yeah she is smokin, I would fuck her!!" and all that bullshit. I will have a convo about girls with guys, but I do that right now and I am fully out. (confuses my straight friends sometimes lol)Are you sure, because I've heard all branches pay roughly the same. It all depends on your rank and if you get deployed but I could be wrong.
As far as which branch to choose from, I'd say the Air Force or Navy are the best. Yeah the Marines teaches you how to be more tough but they get treated the worst and have the highest chance to die in war.
As far as it being homophobic, I've read that the Navy and AF are less homophobic than the other branches but it all depends on your unit and sergeant. It's still not a good idea to be open in the military, if you're actually taking it seriously. You will most likely get discharged in due time.
Oh, and Apollo, I wouldn't be posting a pic of myself in military uniform here on JUB. That's risky and could get you discharged.
