Seriously considering joing the navy

I am a Medical Corpsmen. Which is pretty much a nurse in the Navy. It was a job just to get me in, I plan to change it to something else if I can tomorrow or so.

LOL, it's like they know!!!

It is well understood in the military that Corpsman are often, perhaps even most often, gay. When someone says they are a corpsman, that's always the first thing I think of.

Which is good! You'll fit in great there, and that's a field where people will be least bothered by your orientation. Everyone loves corpsmen, because they help fix people up. I've known a lot of really awesome corpsmen.

Also, as an aside, the USMC does not have its own version of those. So there's always a good chance that you'll be posted to a marine base. At least, that's a plus in my book LOL ;)

Congratulations, I'm proud of you!!

Apollo, good luck and I commend you for what you plan to do. We can never thank those who serve their country enough. It sounds like you are giving this the serious thought it deserves. I admire you. Go for it!

Anchors away!
Shep+..|

Which branch are you joining?

The AF.

Wow, you got a job pretty quick....

My process is taking so long because I need waivers to enlist. I'm still not even qualified yet and need to take a physical and interview with some lieutenant. I will most likely not even leave for training until January.

I wanted to do something in medical too but because I'm not a U.S. citizen my job opportunities will be more limited. I will probably do something in admin but I don't care as long as it's not a shitty, boring job. I'm just excited to be enlisting. I hate that I have to wait so long to leave. I want to go before the winter!

and once again nobody mentions the U.S. Coast Guard. i think you all ought to google it and be prepared to find out what the smallest most elite life saving full time military and humanitarian service does. it even has a peacetime mission.

yes, full mil bennies and something called job satisfaction too but, i understand a lot of people are intimidated by its high standards. after 10 yrs in i bailed. had a successful career (now retired) in the airline industry but still had frequent twinges of regret for not staying the full time. i bailed because my spouses career field needed more stability than a probable move every 4 yrs. oh well, it was great ...:goodevil::goodluck

I have a question about the USAF. If you join the USAF, what are the chances that you will drop bombs on [STRIKE]innocent civilians [/STRIKE] terrorists?

I will never ever join any branch of the military, but I'd rather be in the navy, than bomb a wedding in a brown country. But then again, I might be ill-informed, and only few people in the USAF fly planes, or maybe even the navy flies planes.

I believe all the branches have their own airborne division, including the Navy.

And only the officers get to fly the jets, and I believe they are the smallest part of the Air Force. I don't know for sure.

Not to mention you have to pass the tests to become a pilot, and that is pretty hard I believe. I couldn't become a pilot cause I have no depth perception.

But if you do want to be a pilot, you could try and fly the helicopters that save soldiers lives.

I considered the Coast Guard for a second, but didn't want to go that route. Less travel around the world mostly.

I just found out the Air Force isn't accepting any applicants with a record.

Both the Navy and Air Force are trying to stem the flow of applicants because they have too many. But it seems like your already in, so good luck with it all. Maybe we will cross paths some where along our careers.

I think they will let you join medical. I am sure they hire doctors who aren't US citizens.

Mentally, are you prepared to take another's life in the call of duty yet?
As a hospital corpsman (if i stay with that job) I would be saving lives.

And any rate I change to would change to wouldn't put me in battle either.

Now if I were joining the army, then I would say yes.

appollo, the USCG is world wide. i did japan, all over the south pacific, england, up almost to the north pole and many other places in between.

do you remember that ship hijack where the hi jackers took the captain as hostage and then navy seals rescued him killing the hi jackers? those seals were on the coast guard cutter BOUTWELL for that operation...this is just an fyi and to clear up a misconception many americans have about the "coasties". an enlistment guarantees you mil pay and benniies just not what or whose coast worldwide.

well apollo it's been almost a month. have you made up your mind yet... Navy guys do look hot in their uniforms.oh wait you don't want hottness..

I agree that the Coast Guard doesn't get al the respect it deserves...they intercept drug runners and save people in rough seas. They're less 'military' but what they do is no joke and more than I could do!! Didn't realize they had a worldwide presence though.

I was sworn into the Navy yesterday. And no one said I didn't want hottness, it just wasn't my deciding factor to join.

I just now have to see what job would get me out of here fast. I am thinking of sticking with Hosptial Corpsman. It is less travel than I want out of the Navy, but who knows.

I have to admit, I didn't know either.

I did know the Coast Guard did a big, and very difficult job here in America and that's why I didn't join. I had no idea it had a worldwide presence though.

Who knows. If I re-enlist, I will research the Coast Guard next time. No lie either.

OH

But yeah, I am in the Navy now. I have been sworn into DEP until I ship out.

Congratulations Apollo.
I have many good memories of my own Navy days.
And the day I was sworn in I felt so good. I hope you do too.

Corpsmen is' a great job, too.

Have a great time.

ok appollo, good luck with your navy tour, the dep is a good program for the guy that is sure of his commitment and wants to lock in some commitment fm the service as well as himself.

not to beat an old dog but i was surprised how little people know about the Coast Guard...even the patrolllng of the deltas on off shrore in viet nam. i'll leave that alone now

yr choice of rates is a good one, if you decide to come back to civilian life you are well on the road to RN and currently thats about $55-65,000 a yr (at least here in CA.) good luck, fair winds and following seas
