Shaking up Japan -- an 8.9 quake

Mmmm. I can relate to the complacency part. We have of course the same basic geography in BC, which of course shows no activity since Vancouver's time, thus leading everyone to conclude the volcanos are all extinct....until of course one day someone's tires start to melt. That, combined with an utter lack of preparation, is not ideal.

BTW, some day I aspire to drive from Idiotville to the Boring Lava Fields. You can't make this stuff up.

LOL

I always wonder if Idiotville is real, but I've never taken the trouble to drive the few extra miles to see.

Maybe I should go check it out and get back to you. :D

I am so sorry to hear of the high death toll. This is so different from the early reports.

Kuli,

next time you feel a bit cheezy and are in the spirit of Paul Bunyan,

head for the Tillamook valley and bathe at the end of the Idiotville

Camp road in the University Falls. Might want to expedite the trip

before the Portland areas Boring Lava Field decides to vent and

melts more than tires.

Not that I want to Lassen anything but down this way we always

say.......IT HASTA BE SHASTA"i

It's good to see the companies that have phone service are giving free service to Japan. That will help a lot of people find friends and family.
I've already seen that AT&T doing the same.

FREE CALLS TO JAPAN FOR TIME WARNER CABLE DIGITAL PHONE AND TIME WARNER CABLE BUSINESS CLASS PHONE CUSTOMERS

Release Date:03/11/2011

(NEW YORK, NY) – Time Warner Cable today announced that all calls placed by its Digital Phone customers to Japan will be free through April 15, 2011. The program includes both residential Digital Phone and Business Class Phone customers and will be retroactive for all calls placed on March 11, 2011.

“At Time Warner Cable we are caring members of the communities we serve and we know that in many of those communities right now we have customers worried about family and friends in Japan,” said Glenn Britt, Chairman and CEO, Time Warner Cable. “We have seen an increase in the number of calls made by our customers to family, friends and colleagues in Japan who have been touched by the events that occurred earlier today. They are all in our thoughts and we hope that this program removes a small measure of worry from our customers.”

CNN (I think -- I'm flipping channels so much) had a nuclear engineering physicist on who made the problems with the reactors a lot clearer. But it left me wondering: given that the USS Ronald Reagan is a nuke vessel, with nuke techs and a superb machine shop, might it be possible for them to do a brute force 'bypass' and attach a new pump to run the cooling system?

It's intriguing that Facebook helped organize rebellion against tyranny, and is now connecting people in a huge disaster. An incredible tool.
