Shame on you Sam Adams

the comments after the article are what i find interesting. just another example of how men think with the little head, gay or str8, men are men. in my book it's no biggie. i understand why he would lie about it during the election, but now he is going to pay the piper. its a shame really. he should have realized that he was going to be scrutinized more.

Of course men are men and no one is angel but it casts a bad name to gays. Now conservatives can repeat their rhetoric that gays are just sex animals and are corrupt people.

OK -- but Bill Clinton lied about an affair and his approval rating skyrocketed to 70%. If a gay man does the same thing he has to resign?

I hate to break this to you, but this is really old news on the west coast. We've already forgotten about it out here. That story had to have broke in December or January.

I'm sorry guys, but we have other issues to deal with besdies who the mayor has been sleeping with. Maybe the News back east hasn't broke this story yet, but we have a recession going on and that has kind of been consuming our time out here.

But he is the first openly gay mayor of a metropolitan city and a lot of people will see it with a different angle. Gays, especially those in activism and politics, behave like very upright and honest persons to gain currency among conservatives. And as the writer has said, this thing has damaged the reputation of gays.

Oh by the way, Clinton was already a second-time president (and of course straight) and he had no chance to get to any more higher position than what he already achieved. Sam's career on the other hand can be stalled forever.

News do take some to reach here in the east despite all the technology:D Yeah recession is the biggest issue right now but being on a gay forum, this news was still important for many.

They had an affair, just kisses at first, the teenager said. And then, after his 18th birthday, sex, and a relationship that was hidden from the public eye.

He was 18. Doesn't that make him legal? At least they had the sense to wait.

Also Adams was a Portland City Commissioner while Breedlove was a Legislative intern in Salem. Most people say Adams was his boss, but he wasn’t. They didn’t even work in the same town, but an hour away.

My only issue with it is Adams said it wasn’t true and that is what they say about viable gay people running for office. When it came out, it came out everything they said was true. With that he made everyone in the GLBT community look bad.

I have no doubt this has killed his career. But should gay men be piling up on him or standing up for him? At the very least, there's a double standard going on here.

What exactly did he do? Had consensual sex with a guy who was of age and then lied about it. Wouldn't even make the headlines if he were straight.

Good for him. Fuck that boy - twice.

So what? He had an affair. A tryst. Whatever you want to call it.

I would say it's more of a common occurrence in the political ring than not.

I just wish people would be open about the BS. I mean, if President Clinton went on tv and said "Yup, I got head in the oval office" good for him. He deserves a little relief. G-d knows Hillary wasn't doing it.

I still don't see why it matters what one does behind closed doors? If he's a proven leader and gets the job done, who cares?

Sam Adams caused his own headache. He had the "affair" and then lied about it...and got people to lie about it...and also smeared another gay politician in the process.

Would it have been okay if the other politician was straight? Also people tend to lie when something can be damaging without cause.

It's not "OK" in either case.

Sam made the other guy look like the "dirty" one (and probably ruined Bob Ball's political future in the process) and came off all pompous and superior. When he wasn't.

I live here in his town. And it's a sad place to be. We all (gay and straight) had the highest hopes for him--he's amazingly informed and dedicated to what Portlanders value. No one was better suited to be our mayor.

Now the media "tiptoes" around any story involving our mayor. Our new president shuns him even. It's an unwritten given that this guy is finished, when he could have been our first gay governor, or US Senator.

P.S. His sexual "relationship" with Beau Breedlove probably began when the kid was 17, which (stupidly, and unfortunately) is below the age of consent in this allegedly "liberal" state. Had the affair been a few miles north in Washington State, the age of the younger guy would have been perfectly legal. The case is still under investigation, and may bring Sam's political career to a sad and tragic end.

I agree with everything you said. I somewhat said it in post nine, but you said it better. I go to Portland all the time so I see and hear all of the local stuff as well. I say the only way he is not done with is if it is proved that they waited and he is the best mayor Portland has ever had. I think he is up for the job, but with both sides pissed at him it won’t be easy. In the least he is an idiot with how he handled certain things.

Meh, it's politics. I don't expect someone honest; I expect someone to get the job done.

His name was Beau Breedlove ?? Really ???

Oy. You can't write stuff like this....

The article quotes someone saying, "No one knows what they are doing at 17."

Horseshit.

I knew exactly what I was doing and who I was blowing and why back then...let's not fool ourselves....

So, the mayor got horny, his dick got hard and he did some stupid shit. Anyone reading this that hasn't done the same thing, cast the first judgemental stone....

Honestly....

^Joshua_me, it's not about what we here on JUB think. Judgmental or not.

It's about the voters in Portland. And even those of us who were big supporters are disillusioned. We may still like and respect Sam, even, but realize he's made himself a "non-player" in the political scene here. Really, Randy Leonard, a much less impressive pol is getting all the headlines and buzz around town. There's a good chance the recall effort and election will remove Sam from office, and who knows what the criminal investigation will reveal?

And, looseliam, if "getting the job done" is all that matters with politicians, then (up to a certain point in time) Stalin, Hitler, and Mussolini get top marks.

Sam Adams, the openly gay mayor of Portland, has let us down. First denying an 'affair' with a twink to win election and now admitting and repenting over it. Tim Egan wrote a great piece on the whole situation last week. Here is the link

You wajdan sound like a shallow person. You clearly have not thought this though before you made your 'shame on you' headline..where there is no shame.

oh yeah, they are my heroes! :p

@the topic: the journalists just won't drop the issue. They have to bring it up over and over. They should find something worthier to cover, not the personal issue of politicians. When it's over, it's over.

^That's just it, it isn't over.

If the investigation goes against Mayor Adams, and it could with any witnesses to what transpired, then he could be found guilty of sex with a minor.

I hope that doesn't happen. And I also hope that Oregon will lower the "age of consent" to something more in line with the rest of the world.....
