Although the lyrics sound like it's about a woman, I have always thought the song sounds like a gay man completely crushed by a breakup. It's a MONUMENT to the pain and grief suffered after the loss of a special relationship that tears the soul apart. The singer imagines that he can somehow bring dignity to all the wallowing in self-pity that he's doing. I totally get it.
