Hey guys, I'm buying a new PC this Saturday or next week... I have Vista Home Premium DVD and the XP Home Edition SP2 CD, which one do you recommend on installing?

I've been using XP since 2003 and never had any problems with it but I'd like to try something new...

I've heard not so positive reviews on Vista tho so I'm not sure what to do.

The new PC should be Vista compatible... it's Intel Core Duo @ 2Ghz, 2 GB of RAM and has all the other stuff required by Vista...

What can you suggest?

I've used both OS and for me it's XP. Vista will be good, but it's buggy, complicated and annoying right now, and XP has a proven track record.

Dual boot and see which one you like the most :D

We'll talk you through it if you want.

I've been using Vista Ultimate since its release with no problems and I've installed it on numerous other machines and everyone was deliriously happy with it.

If you go with Vista we'll help you tweak it so that it doesn't give you annoying warnings etc.

i agree with noelie.

I got my current computer last January with Vista Home Premium pre-installed. (I also use Firefox 3, and OpenOffice instead of that Microsoft stuff.)

I'm very happy with Vista. Only one small problem so far... it restarted unexpectedly once. Guess I've never had the problems some others seem to have had.

Previous pc had XP sp2. It would freeze up from sometimes, especially when I was running graphic-intensive apps or games. Couldn't even reboot or power off, had to pull the plug.

I like Vista's look, style, and "feel" better than XP's. With Vista, you have to "Allow" the installation or running of a new application or .exe file. That was slightly annoying at first, but got used to it quickly enough.

I say go with Vista. :D

Oh, and if it is in your budget, go for a nice widescreen high def monitor. You'll be glad you did. It's worth the money.

Hope this helps, buddy.

Thanks for all the replies :D

I installed XP. But I'm gonna try to install vista too on another partition... the problem is... i need some tutorual on how to split the 250 GB hard drive into partitions.

Any good free software to do that?

I'd appreciate any help with partitioning the HD.

And also i have a question, each time I load the OS, the "safely remove hardware" icon appears telling me it's now safe to remove the "removable storage device" but there is nothing connected to the USB ports... what might be the problem? Bad drivers? I tested the 4 USB ports and they work fine, all of them can read my pm3 player... but that icon appears each time the system loads and stays ther eintul I hit "safely remove" even tho there's nothing to remove...

The OS is XP SP3 with all latest updates installed.

WIndows ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
install sexp (xp)

DUDE!! your windows xp cd has a partitioner......
but if you want another one download nad burn gparted

Noelie, not really problems apart of the "safely remove" thing... gotta see how to sort that. The OS installed pretty fast and runs okay. Yeah i know it aksed for partitioning before installing but I messed that step up and it didn't partition it... now i have to do it.

I haven't really chosen which one OS I'll use I will try Vista too but gotta figure out the partitioning, thanks for the tips...

To reiterate Puzuzzu: GParted can (nondestructively) resize partitions for you. Download the iso, burn it to a disk as bootable, and boot your computer from that disk. It will not damage your windows installation or install anything to your hard drive. And it's free.

You should install (Clean install, not update install) Vista first. It has a wonderful manager that lets you work your partitions with ease.

Also, Vista recognizes XP, but XP don’t know shit about Vista. :)

Xp first so that vista can recognize Xp, and set it part of the windows boot menu (I forgot this stuff for windows, i think its ntldr or nltdr or something).
Good luck ..|

If you just burned the iso file itself to a disk, that is not bootable (iso files won't boot). An iso is an "image" of a disk. It is a way of combining the many files of a disk into a single file, to make it easier to send over the internet. You need to separate out the individual component files (present on the original disk) from the iso you downloaded when you burn it. See:

wow lots of different ideas i have xp and would like to install vista is it possible to do on a computer that is 3 years old? and would it remove xp all together?
dont do it, a three year old computer wont run Vista very well. You need at least 1GB of RAM for Vista and a fast processor.

oh, and D-Base, I would recommend Vista. I have been using it from the beginning and it is solid. I find the look and feel to be superior to XP. You WILL get annoyed by UAC in the first like 3 days, but don't turn it off. It will keep your comp safe later on. When you start to never see it, and you download something, and it pops up. Good to check up on it.

Ummm, people voting for XP. Could you at least tell him WHY he should go for XP?

Ok installed vista too and I love it. Now, I would like to wipe out xp cuz I think it got bugged during installation... if I need it later on i can install XP on another partition. My question is, how to remove XP, it's on another partition... do i just format the partition that XP is installed to right form vista??? Will that remove the dual boot screen too cuz I won't need it if I wipe out the partition...

Need help with this. Noelie? :p
