They never turn out well, they are always completely circumlocutory, they are polarising, they leave a bad taste in the mouth and they end up being locked.

Isn't it simply better for everyone that they are banned from the outright to save the bandwidth and people's time?

Hmm....which post icon to use...

Why is there a RELIGION post-icon, but no SCIENCE icon - shirly shome mishtake....

Re: Should religious discussion be banned from JUB

It's not the only topic that can't be rationally discussed, but why would you want to ban it or any of the others? It's not like you need to read/participate in everything on here and knowing how these threads usually turn out you can go in with that expectation or just skip over them.

Re: Should religious discussion be banned from JUB

NO, but I think threads about religion that are started by shit stirrers who only want to stir shit about religion should be closed and the OP who continually does so should be cast into a lake of fire.

So, watch it, you are on the precipice! Greaves has already fallen in.

Re: Should religious discussion be banned from JUB

It wouldn't hurt my feelings if it was!

Re: Should religious discussion be banned from JUB

I'm not in favour of banning, but there is theoretically a place where it can be discussed without degenerating into an all-out flamefest and I think it would be a good idea if it were kept there.

Re: Should religious discussion be banned from JUB

Greaves' threads were about religion the same way a thread announcing "homosexuals are fucking perverts and should be shot" is about sexuality. They were not meant to foster debate - they were meant to cause a reaction. They almost always were simply an announcement (slightly altered each time) that his belief in no belief was superior, and an attack on all other beliefs. Then he'd amend "thoughts?", as if to make it sound like he was simply looking for opinions.

The subject matter wasn't the problem. The poster - and, more to the point, his attitude - was.

Exactly, a shit stirrer.

Ben, are you really saying what I think you are.
My my my you are going soft.

To answer your question: No.

To elaborate on my answer: If you want to ban topics that are

then you would have to ban a lot more than religious threads.

After such action was taken all JUB would have left are threads about people's post counts and how another one of us has "fallen in love with a straight guy." Oh, and cut/uncut threads.
Is that really what you want?
I didn't think so.

Don't worry about saving bandwidth, go save a tree instead. As for people's time... it is theirs to waste.

Re: Should religious discussion be banned from JUB

You can't really discuss much about religion in the Religion Forum, because almost no one posts there.

And I avoid discussions about religion (usually) in this forum, because all you get are a lot of posts declaring that religion is the opiate of the people and believers are idiots.

Of course most of those people know little or nothing about religious history or the nuances of individual religious tenets. Their primitive notions run to Christian=fundamentalist, Moslem=fanatic, etc.

And then you get the religious folk who never question what they believe or reject the beliefs of others whether they understand them or not.

It all makes real dialogue nigh impossible.

Re: Should religious discussion be banned from JUB

It ain't what you do, it's the way that you do it.

It ain't what you say, it's the way that you say it.

That's what gets things done.

Re: Should religious discussion be banned from JUB

I take it no one tried the Brownies with nuts recipe?

Re: Should religious discussion be banned from JUB

I chose to eat lightly, this evening. But I have printed your menu and will attempt to create a splendiferous miracle, over this weekend.

Thanks for being a hell of pastry chef.

Re: Should religious discussion be banned from JUB

Putting nuts in brownies is like putting chocolate sauce on cheesecake. It's a mortal sin. (And now we're back on religion.)

Well, political discussions almost always turn out the same way. Should we ban them too? If you banned everything that caused conflict the whole forum would close. The mods do a great job of keeping things under control. No, we shouldn't ban religious topics.

Re: Should religious discussion be banned from JUB

Seriously, I think that threads on religion can be handled well on the Religion board and I think that there have been some interesting and challenging ideas mooted over the past few years that I've been reading the boards.

I do think that any thread on religion should get immediately moved to that venue.

I also think that greaves was just trolling as usual in order to create disharmony and DRAHHHMAAAAAAAHHHHHH.

Must suck being greaves.

Re: Should religious discussion be banned from JUB

My goodness yes. Gay people with religion, it's just wrong I tells ya!

What is this world coming to. [-X

they leave a bad taste in the mouth

Please stop licking the screen. #-o

Re: Should religious discussion be banned from JUB

no the topic shouldn't be banned. What I think should be banned are the posters on either side who know that the points of view will make them angry but just can't resist reading the "offending" post and then jumping in to denounce the other side... over and over and over

Re: Should religious discussion be banned from JUB

You're never going to say something to change someone's opinion on religion. Changes to peoples' views of such things come slowly. Those changes are shaped by their consideration of their life's experience -including things they've read. So eventually you can influence someone's views, even though you'll likely never know that you've been part of that process.

So yes, religious discussion -even baiting- seems perfectly reasonable to me.
