Should religious discussion be banned from JUB?

Re: Should religious discussion be banned from JUB

It's 9:30am in the UK, I have just come home from work after a 10 hour shift. I haven't slept for 24 hours.

I'm tired. Very tired. I'm going to bed soon.

As much as I would usually like to, I really can't be bothered to have a silly little flame war with somebody like you at this moment in time.

Regards.

Exactly! You see this as a silly little flame war. 'cause you are, as I said before, "so superior."

I see it as just an opportunity to take this piss out of you. Sorry that you can't take a joke.

But you are tired. Sleep well!

I can take a joke. Usually I need to find something funny/mildly amusing before it registers as a joke.

I am tired, perhaps that's why I missed the subtle humorous undertones in your post.

I shall finish this cup of tea that I am drinking and retire to my bed. If I re-read your posts in several hours time, I am sure that my sides will split.

Feel free to continue taking the proverbial in my absence.

Hmmm... I somehow doubt they will. Lucky you're a doctor, though, and can stitch 'em up, should you need to, eh? Stroke of good fortune, that.

BOT... I'd be happier if there were no religious discussions here, unless they could be no holds barred. I was debating via PM the inherent dangers of a no-flame zone in that it completely stifles the argument because everyone has to be so careful about what they say lest they be accused of flaming. I'd vote for all no-flame zones to be abolished; or at least, have their mandates rewritten to allow more vocal and contrary posts provided they were on topic. I mean, no point in just having a thread where everyone calls everyone else something offensive; however, if someone is a little more passionate or vehement in their opposing viewpoint it should be completely allowed. I don't appreciate censorship in any way, shape, manner or form.

However, I have yet to see/participate in a really productive religious debate in JUB which doesn't end in the thread being cordoned off or closed down or heavily moderated after the fact to remove anything controversial. The ones which didn't get closed off tend to end up with everyone coughing up the same arguments over and over and in the end resentfully agreeing to disagree until the next one rolls around, which does seem rather pointless to me.

Still, I'd rather see a moderated site with loose restrictions than a site in which certain topics were banned, I suppose.

Re: Should religious discussion be banned from JUB

The only reason to close any thread is when a lack of respect for an opposing view degenerates into a personalized insult fest. Religious topics tend to bring this out in humans one notices.

The entire reason this thread popped up was the premise that people who adhere to a religion were idiots; not a good place to start.

The ritualized expression of faith is an endlessly fascinating subject. All human progress/regress can be placed in the context of religious movements, including those that elevate humans to position of deity.

As long as everyone respects the right of every individual to either believe or not believe and to privately pursue their own matters of faith, or to celebrate them with their fellow beleivers, we'd all be just fine. The problem is when anyone, either deist or atheist attempts to impose their own beliefs on others.

But even this has led to some breathtaking consequences in the history of humankind. And will continue to do so as well. For better or worse, depending on one's own point of view.

Then wouldn't the best solution be to move such threads to F&G? :p

I hold for the freedom of speech. The freedom to be a complete idiot is anotheer matter, so what if the people who cannot discuss religious topics in a civil manner were banned instead?

What if they weren't banned and you learned to ignore them instead?

Re: Should religious discussion be banned from JUB

HB's [human beings] have evolved a lot of fear-related instincts. Looking at it another way, it's one reason we're so smart.
I'm agreeing with you strongly.
Some of those instincts get cultivated more than others, depending on our/their socio-cultural conditioning.
Replies by sentence:
Agreed.
Somewhat agreed.
Agreed; such as the fear of strangers, of the dark, or of heights. Note: I left prejudices off that list for a reason. :)

Just to reiterate, I certainly do not think that religious discussion should be banned.
I just thought I'd "quote" this to remind some of you who chose not to read threads in their entirety.

If you are about done nattering and baiting Ben, please feel free to join the rest of us in an intelligent discussion.
In the mean time, you might want to check you own special brand of "superiority complex" at the door.

^^Well said, Brijan.

Re: Should religious discussion be banned from JUB

Religious discussion should not be banned. If it is something that does not interest you, then don't read it.

This ^ post illustrates perfectly complete illogicality.

You espouse freedom of speech. Great.

But not for people YOU deem to be "complete idiots". You ask for "complete idiots" who voice an opinion, to be banned. And the thread is deleted.

Yet when someone, inferentially, says you are an idiot, are your comments banned?

Any logical thoughts?;)

On a side note:

Atheist Sees Image of Big Bang in Piece of Toast

Atheist Sees Image of Big Bang in Piece of Toast

For Immediate Release: Miracle Toast?

(ACPA-london) Excitement is growing in the Northern England town of Huddlesfield following the news that a local man saw an image of the big-bang in a piece of toast. atheist donald chapman, 36, told local newspaper, "the huddlesfield express" that he was sitting down to eat breakfast when an unusual toast pattern caught his eye.
"I was just about to spread the butter when I noticed a fairly typical small hole in the bread surrounded by a burnt black ring. however the direction and splatter patterns of the crumbs as well as the changing shades emanating outwards from this black hole were very clearly similar to the chaotic-dynamic non-linear patterns that one would expect following the big bang". "It's the beginning of the world" he added excitedly.

Ever since news of the discovery made national headlines, local hoteliers have been overwhelmed by an influx of atheists from all over the country who have flocked to Huddlesfield to catch a glimpse of the scientific relic. "I have always been an Atheist and to see my life choices validated on a piece of toast is truly astounding" said one guest at the Huddlesfield arms hotel.
To the surprise of many, the UK national atheist association has asked its members not to pay attention to the story despite its potential to inspire less faith. "Given what the religious believe already, this is an easy sell" said one disgruntled activist who said he was going to huddlesfield anyway noting that "Seeing is not believing".

Was Hitler into sarcasm?

Was Stalin?

Was Saddam Hussein?

Anyone who advocates the banning of free speech - whatever the subject of the discussion - is a fascist.

Re: Should religious discussion be banned from JUB

I wouldn't mind religious discussions banned in general.

I've not time for such rubbish.

^One of the saddest and most stupid posts ever on JUB.

Oh, no. Because I value your opinion oh so much.

And out of all the shite on this board, THIS is the post you find the most stupid? Remove your blinders. Perhaps, have a view in the mirror if you've time in between.

I fancy myself more of a Mussolini fan.

And what a wonderfully general statement.

Oh wise one, please regale us with how things should be in the world.
