Signal Of DVD's Demise?

I'm shocked.

More than twenty posts in, and not a single person posted "People still buy DVDs?"

Just like people used to have vinyl LP collections. And where are they now...?

People collect vinyl and it has made a comeback. The record companies have actually reissued quite a few past major releases and tacked a $20+ price tag on it. People are buying them. Even Best Buy is now selling vinyl.

I think alot of people still buy DVD's so that commnt wouldn't make sense

They do. There are forums just like this related to home theatre and DVD releases. People are already shelling out $250 for a six million dollar man complete series from Time-Life. If companies are making that kind of money I think it would be economically stupid for them to stop pressing DVDs.

Also remember that a large portion of a film's profit is made from DVD sales.

It makes perfect sense if you're looking to point out that you're so ahead of the curve that you don't know where the rest of the world might be.

It hasn't made a comeback, it's still a dead platform. Vinyl is a very small niche market and (likely) a large portion of those people nowadays use them for the 'cool factor' in being different.

Is that why you're wearing a T-shirt with a picture of a record on it?

The idea of going to a store and buying a DVD is about as appealing as searching for a rotary phone.

Unfortunately, there are still those of us who can't afford to download videos. I can barely afford the internet package I have, and it comes with limited bandwidth.

Downloading and streaming are out of the question for me.

Streaming video has a long way to go to catch up to the HD quality of a disc, especially blu-ray. I have streamed videos that were supposedly HD, but really look and sound noticeably inferior to the quality of HD I get from discs. Full HD streaming video would require sufficient bandwidth from the server. Most of them are cutting the true HD quality to gain bandwidth to serve more users.

I like DVD's for the extra features. I rarely buy DVD's of most things because how many times am I really going to watch something I've already seen before?

Eventually it will go by way of the 8 track tape, but not anytime soon.

There have been a lot of audio and video formats in the past few decades and this is just another one.

I do love my netflix on my IPHONE. The small screen sucks, but it's really cool i can queue almost anything

So you have the money to rent/buy DVDs, yet can't even afford basic internet?

BTW, you are at the wrong internet provider if you have capped download limits. Only cellphone companies these days limit bandwidth. In fact I can't even remember a time where home internet providers had a download limit.

Who said I buy/rent DVD with any sort of regularity? The last DVD I bought was from a used DVD store, and it cost me $3.99. It was Alice in Wonderland. The last one before that was Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, also previously owned.

And the only other internet provider around here (except for a 2-bit local establishment) is cable, and it's a whole lot more than I'm paying now. I could pay for unlimited bandwidth if I had the money to throw away on it, but I don't.

Oh, and I don't have a cell phone, either.
