Does anyone own a Sleep Number bed? If you do, was it worth the money?

I'm in a situation where I have to sleep on one a couple of times a year (in a hotel). I have NEVER gotten a good night's sleep on one. I cannot get the firmess right and during the night it makes these creepy wheezing sounds as the air pump maintains the pressure in the bladders in the bed. :grrr:

Yes.

The Select Comfort bed isn't supposed to make wheezing sounds. It's supposed to get to a certain level and stay there. It can be loud GETTING to a certain level, but once it's there, it's supposed to simply maintain the pressure. Ours doesn't make any noise once it's set. Maybe the ones you've slept on have been old and "wheezy". :)

Pubert and I actually got two twin Select Comfort beds in a king size frame. It's worked out great, since I like a much firmer bed (65) than he does (30). There is, of course, that "seam" in the middle, but we haven't found that to be an issue.

I was thinking about making a similar post as I am in the market for a new mattress. How much are these beds? Are they really that much better or last any longer. Are they really that much more comfortable? Having to "pump up" your bed every night seems too weird. I can just see myself undoing a new shirt and accidentally sticking a straight pin in the bed and the whole thing explodes like a giant balloon.

I think they are made quite a bit sturdier than that Cityboy. However the last time I looked for a mattress they had a movable one that allowed you to raise your feet or back. That seemed interesting. You can put any mattress on top of that movable frame and you just forgo the box spring.

Of the mattresses i tried I think i will get a memory foam type when i return from my little journey overseas.

when we were in indy this past week on vacation we looked at the different models and tested the different numbers. we are definitely getting one. they are really not that expensive as long as you don't get all of the bells and whistles, although adjustable ones are really cool.

I've slept on them and have a bad back. I have never slept well either...irritates my back.
I (we) purchased a Tempur-Pedic and it was the best money we have ever spent...I would recommend to anyone!

Lindsay Wagner sleeps on one. So she claims in the commercials at least.

Have you had yours long?

We have a Natural Latex Foam mattress - similar to memory foam, but a little different.

I tried a Tempurpedic for a sleep study last week - I think I could get used to it, but it was actually firmer than our Natural Latex - that and all the electrodes for the sleep study didn't make for a very comfortable night's sleep.

We like our Natural Latex -

A bit over a year, I think. No issues.

You don't pump it up every night. It's suggested you try different settings your first few nights, as you look for one that's ideal. But once you find one you like, you just leave it there. I think I may have altered the setting once when I was sick back in December, but that's the only time I've altered it since we got it.

If you want to try it - go to a Radisson - they have these mattresses. I stayed at a Radison for 2 weeks on business - and I HATED that thing. The lowest number was like sleeping on the bed frame and hard as a rock - the middle was just like an average mattress. The highest number was again - hard as a rock. I would NEVER spend the money on one of these. I have a nice Sealy Posturpedic Pillow Top and I love it.

I have a Tempurpedic bed. Always had back problems, not anymore. I tried the Sleep Number and did not like it. Besides, what if the functions break? I didn't want a bed that could stop functioning due to a part.

I'd second spending the night at a Radisson, but do know that these beds tend to be a bit more used and abused than a standard one will be. As I said above, once you set the level, you can pretty much put that control away. The beds in Radissons probably get a ton more abuse from people checking out all the settings every night, so they might get "wheezy" (as pointed out in a post above).

These beds might not be for everyone - the posts here seem testament to that. :) But I do really like mine.

they are air mattresses, the materials used in them are cheap and they spend tons of money on advertising. I bet ya they spend more money on advertising than materials to make them. I'm not saying that they are bad. Some people of course like them. :)

There is no mattress that is right for everyone. Each person is going to have different needs and wants. I know a lot of people that hate Tempurpedic too. Tempurpedic is another company that spends tons of money on advertising. Some people say that it feels like quicksand, that they don't like the lumpy feeling right after they move, and they don't like the formaldehyde smell. But of course, they have their following as well.

I tried a Tempurpedic bed. I have a slipped disk in my back and I couldn't get out of the bed because I sunk in too much. It killed my back.
