Holy Crap! I have never seen a winter storm forecast this bad around here. Starting Monday into Tuesday 1/2 inch or more of freezing rain, sleet and ice turning to snow on Tuesday with 12 plus inches of snow and the possibility of thunder-snow. The snow itself really wouldn't be that bad, it's all the freaking ice! Then to make matters worse, the temperature is down to Zero Fahrenheit (-18C) Wednesday night. Where is global warming when you need it? I hope that the power stays on!

I'm in the middle of it as well. They just said blizzard winds and 10-13" of snow.

Oh No...

I'm picking up here in Atlanta on Wednesday morning and driving to Seattle -- I was SUPPOSED to be in St. Louis Wednesday night...

Better go check the weather reports...

:):):)

I'm sure that YOU are aware of the Arctic Paradox...

In case others aren't -- our HORRIBLE winter is actually a RESULT of global warming...

:):):)

Yes, I am aware of that.

I should have put the winky eye ;) after that comment. It was an attempt at a little humor in a bad situation.

Last week we had that kind of a storm. I was sitting in my office and thought a train was rumbling into Union Station (which is north and east of our office building). When it kept up, I realized we were getting thundersnow. At the time it was pouring rain -- which washed all of the salt put down in preparation for the snow/ice event. The rain was literally falling sideways.

Minutes later, the sound of sleet began pounding on the windows which changed to the wettest, sloppiest snow. Walking home, it was often like getting hit with a mushy snowball! Most of the snow hit north and west of us, fortunately.

This week I am supposed to fly to Detroit tomorrow and have meetings in and around downtown all week. I am not sure I even want to go and, least of all, want to be snowed in downtown Detroit! Needless to say it is not a friendly place, less so gay friendly.

I really hope I can get home next Friday!

We're getting the snow, but not the ice. Far too cold to get sleet or freezing rain.

"Thunder-Snow" ??? I've never even heard of that before. What is it ?

Thunder and lighting during a snow storm. Instead of raining, it's snowing. That doesn't happen very often but OMG when it does you get incredible amounts of snow, just like you have heavy rain in a thunderstorm.

Another blizzard?

We just had one and then another one before that. One reason I moved away from Chicago is because New York has milder winters and they don't have those bone chilling temperatures, well it used to be like that again.

Whoa- sounds kinda cool - and scary. I didn't even know that was possible.

Was 75° here this weekend and some of the 30,000 running in the Houston Marathon complained it was too warm. Before the Aeros Hockey game at Toyota Center, my partner and I walked to nearby Discovery Green Park and they were taking out the refrigeration coils that had been keeping the outdoor ice rink frozen. Hard to believe folks were walking around in shorts and t-shirts on January 28. My maple trees are budding now and forming winged seeds. Noticed some sycamores (plane trees) still have last year's green leaves still hanging. We have had one night where it was below freezing for a couple of hours that nipped my Mandevilla vines and bananas and there may be one more light freeze coming up soon. It's almost time to plant my tomato plants. Grew up in Chicago but don't miss winters at all.

They aren't that scary, and I've never noticed an increase in snow when it happens. In fact, except for 1 time, I've only ever seen the lightning once. All the other times (once every few years or so), I've only heard the dull thunder. It's nothing like a thunderstorm if that's what you're imagining.

Maybe not where you are. The thunder is more subdued because the snow dampens the sound. If it happens at night you can see plenty of lightning flashes but you don't usually see lightning bolts. You must be the exception then because any time we've ever had thundersnow we really get dumped on and that's pretty common. It must not happen there the way it does here.
Heavier snowfall is usually linked to thundersnow, both experts agreed.

Sympathy from Kansas City.

We are predicted to having freezing rain after midnight tonight, followed by some snow. The the heavy snow will hit all day Tuesday with a predicted 14 inches total.

Most of our area weathermen came be somewhat alarmists, and I am hoping their predictions are off a bit.

But it may be snowbound AGAIN!

This is a common misunderstanding when it comes to meteorology. Surface temps have nothing to do with whether you will get snow, sleet, or freezing rain. It has to do with the temps above the ground. St. Louis will have a layer at about three or four thousand feet above the ground warmer that 32F and thus will have problems with sleet. Southeast of there that layer of warm air aloft is much deeper but temps right near the surface remain sub freezing, thus freezing rain as the droplets wont have time to re freeze before hitting the ground. Of course if the entire atmospheric profile above ground level is sub freezing you get snow.

This is going to be an epic snowstorm for a big chunk of the midwest and lower great lakes. I wouldn't be surprised to see a few areas approach two feet of snow before all is said and done. Chicago/Detroit/Quad Cities/Milwaukee/Peoria/Joplin/Tulsa/Cleveland could all be shut down for days. Add in 30-50mph winds and there will be huge snow drifts that will likely close down interstates. Southeast of the heavy snow there will be heavy freezing rain in/around Springfield Mo, Indianapolis In, Columbus Oh. and points in between. That will cause a tremendous amount of problems and places could be without power for a week or longer.

Anytime I've ever experience thundersnow its been pretty common to get 3-5" in an hours time. I have seen it a few times in my life and every time its been some of the heaviest snowfall I've ever seen. Its not like your run of the mill heavy snow in a standard storm, it will snow so hard you can't see your hand in front of your face. At least here in the midwest/Eastern Iowa where I'm at. This storm will certainly have thundersnow with it somewhere in the heavy snow zone, its a very intense dynamic storm that is going to be developing.

Going to hit us as well....I'm really getting sick of winter

I know how we get snow and sleet and freezing rain. Hell, I've lived long enough to experience them all. . . over and over and over and over. . .

When the storm hits us, our conditions will not be conducive to anything other than snow. Ice in any form is impossible. Seriously, we're at the temperatures where the Fahrenheit and Celsius scales meet. Much warmer temperatures are necessary for freezing rain to occur.
