  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

So, did you get here early enough to catch the Siggie sweepers cleaning up the forum?

...Meanwhile the admins are still ignoring me.
The term "admin" is confusing.

There's a group of moderators who have "JUB admin" titles (like me). We manage the forum settings and also moderate the forums. We don't manage the web services or any of the technical aspects of the site.

The web team manages the web services and technical aspects of JUB. We sometimes refer to them as the "site admins". They're the ones who are trouble-shooting the issues with Cloudflare (which seem to have gotten better recently). Don't assume the web team reads the forum. That's not their job.

... I turned them off soon after joining as well. I mighta even still been on dial-up back then (if not, it was the slowest DSL option available), so did little things like that so pages would load faster...plus I did find some of them annoying too.

We still have members who are on slow connections, particularly older members and members who live in rural areas or who live outside the US, Canada, Australia and the UK. We also have members who have older computers. Animated gifs are a pain in the ass for these members.

We've had complaints and several of the people who had animated gifs in their signatures have fixed the issue which is appreciated. No one asked us about the reason for the notice about the signature policy (which has been the same for over 10 years).

During the past 10 years, most members have respected the rules and have been considerate of other members who are on slower computers and slower connections. It was rare that we ever had to contact anyone about their signature. It's only been recently that we've seen oversized animated gifs in signatures or multiple animated gifs in signatures.

Images in your signature: You are allowed to include images in your signature. Regular members can have .jpg, .png or non-animated .gifs in their signature. JUB supporters are allowed to have animated gifs. If you are not a JUB supporter, we will remove any animated gifs from your signature.
There are also restrictions on the image size. These boxes illustrate the maximum allowable sizes for signature files:

attachment.php

attachment.php

Code:
                                                            Regular Member JUB Supporter
Maximum number of characters in signature: 250 1000
Maximum lines in signature: 3 10
Maximum images in signature 5 10
Video allowed in signature: No Yes!
Can have animated gif in signature: No Yes!
Max image size: 480 by 60 pixels 500 by 120 pixels

JUB Supporter status is only $30 and it's good for 10 years! And you can also purchase Supporter status as a gift for another member.

I took mine down when I spotted the announcement. It was made for me by a former member who left us in a less than pleasant moment.

I was a JUB Supporter 3 years in a row a long time ago and somehow was under the impression it was a 'lifetime' thing; when I tried to re-up one more time The System told me I was already a Supporter and it wouldn't take my money. So I quit trying.

Why don't they do the same thing as I do: turn off the display of signatures. Can be found in the user settings.

It's an option but some people do want to see signatures. For example, my signature has handy links to the BBCode list and smiley list that is a quick reference.

For those who do want to turn off signatures - it's under My Settings>General Settings>Thread Display Options>Visible Post Elements:
  • Show Signatures - uncheck to hide signatures
  • Show Avatars - uncheck to hide avatars

The software used to block us from uploading oversized images in avatars and siggies.

Can it not prevent the same for animated GIFs and oversized?

I mean, we still see a few non-VIP members posting regularly with animated GIFs, and that's the same as before all the banner warning. What's the point of it all?

So those of us who can't afford to cough up £30 aren't allowed to post gifs like we've been doing for years, cheers Jase.

I can understand people paying up back in the day when the place was a hive of activity, nowadays I don't get the point other than buying a few lifeboats for the Titanic.

regardless if the masses continue to post it doesn't negate the cost of band width to support a site and forum of this size - forums are becoming obsolete because of the huge social media sites - BUT those sites do not give you the same kind of interactions with other people like forum format sites do - it is one of the reasons I came back to JUB after a long absence...

I just paid the 30bucks but it did not allow me to enter my user name so I don't know if it will give me the upgrade...

It still does... when the images are uploaded or are JUB attachments.

I think you're missing the point.

I didn't and don't have a problem with the siggies. I have never reported any violators, unlike the underage pics rule or the no frontal nudity.

It's just that I don't get the whole point of the nagging, the moronic banners, and then not doing the simplest thing to do what they say they are doing. It just seems dumb beyond daft.

What's the point of it all?

Either it doesn't matter at all, the mods never read the forum, or . . . ?

How do you know what process the mods are going about to remove the offending signatures? As if they don't have enough work to do already, there are few of them and they have a life to live of their own.

I just don't see the point of bitching about them.

No, I don't. Certainly don't see any flame wars going on in the forum.

The original question is the original question. Why is it a 3-4 week process just to stop a handful of members from using animated or oversized siggies. It is a big enough deal to banner the site for a month, then it's a big enough deal to discuss it.

@ a handful of members

We don't know how many people are posting on the entire site daily, or if the task involves removing the offending/problem causing GIFs from history/the archives, as well, or if it's a one-at-a-time process.

If you think the numbers of people posting on JUB every day is large, visit the most active forums and see for yourself.

As for siggies on old posts, if you have a siggie today that's a fish, and in six months you change to a bird, the old posts become birds because your avatar, siggie, and caption on your avatar are all part of your profile which is updated everywhere it exists on the site.
