  • Hi Guest - Did you know?

So... I got chickens.

OMG watch out for foxes - its sad the morning after a fox gets in

If he lives in an area that allows chickens and roosters, coyotes will probably be worse. They'll kill all the chickens instead of just one.

Well, it's not like being a landlord is a real job!

Last year when I told you guys I had quit my job to run my company full time, I said very clearly that the reason I'm doing all of this is so I can actually have time to enjoy my coffee in the morning and pick up hobbies. Last year was koi pond. This year I wanna try out having chickens. After all, what's the point of owning enough investment properties to replace my old full time job income if I just ended not being able to enjoy a nice cup of coffee in the morning and having extracurricular activities like koi ponding and chicken cooping?

And this is just a start. I have long term plans to do even more stuff with my life. For example, eventually I will turn management of all my properties over to a prop management company. This will open up a huge chunk of my time. I will then be able to start another company. Have another business idea. Writing a book is another ambition that I want to pursue. Etc. Plenty of things to do in life other than constantly sucking up to a boss to keep my job.

So, earlier today my impatience got the better of me. I wanted to see what the chickens would do if I released them now. So, I opened the chicken housing. Immediately, they came out and started wandering around. There are 5 of them, 1 male and 4 females. The male ran off with one of the females, 2 other females paired off and ran off in a different direction, and the 4th female just stayed around the cage area.

Then the unthinkable happened. The male and female pair found a gap under the fence big enough for them to escape. They got out of the fence area and went into the wooded area behind my yard. I panicked and ran out the gate and into the wooded area. Saw the two just cruising around. I didn't want to get too close because I might scare them off. All afternoon they just wandered around in that wooded area as I kept a watch from inside the fence.

Then the 2 female pair also found that gap and they also left the yard. By this time, I thought well that's that for those 4. The last remaining one stayed relatively close to the cage. Guess she wasn't very adventurous.

I went inside to eat dinner. When I came back out in the late evening, all 5 of them were back in the cage. Woohoo!

So, apparently, they already know that's their home. Phew!

I had a distant cousin who also had chickens. He did loose one to a hawk. Sometimes the rooster would keep watch on the sky and give a warning to the other chickens and they would all run for shelter. If you feed them, they will return to home eventually. He had two chicken coops and one night a mother raccoon and her babies got into a coop and killed all of the chickens in it. The chickens in the other coop were spooked and he had to get rid of them for some reason. Maybe they wouldn't lay eggs after that or something. I didn't visit him often, but those are stories I picked up.

Also, my grandfather had some chickens when I was young and kept them under his back porch. Rats ended up tunneling under it to get to the chickens.

Hey...I was just kidding, hence the :jk: emoji. Maybe you can add trying not to take things so seriously to your list of life ambitions. ;)

Or weasels. Jesus they are fuckers.

Will having more roosters give them a fighting chance if something like a weasel gets in? Do roosters actually try to defend the flock?

My big-ass 120 pound dog met the chickens face to face yesterday and he actually did not do anything to do. I'm thinking I can have him watch the chickens. He's bigger than any coyote or weasel around here.

Here is guidance on multiple roosters: https://blog.mypetchicken.com/2012/10/26/5-rules-for-keeping-multiple-roosters/

Basically, you need lots of chickens and lots of space.

In addition, you need to consider what the squabbling roosters might do to your peace of mind, as well as whether it might get out of hand, or possibly trigger aggression in your dogs if they are agitated by roosters fighting.

And be careful about assuming that your dog is indifferent or amicable to the flock. It is possible for dogs to get in a mood, as well as behave differently in the presence of other dogs when a pack instinct may trigger.

So, today I tried letting them out to see what happens. For a long while they just stayed relatively close to the coop.

Then they disappeared into the forest behind the fence. The entire day, I was sweating wondering if they were going to come back.

Then this late evening they came back :gogirl:

They all left together and came back together. So I guess they are a flock now.

:D

Do you have any trouble gettting them all into the coop at night? Or do they just go in by themselves?

They all went in by themselves. Then I just close the coop and lock it.

Please forgive me. When I saw the title I thought KFC.

On the weekend, we had the most beautiful fox run up through our lawn...coming from the direction of our neighbours.

Who have chickens.

We call it 'Neighbour's Take-Out Chicken'.
