  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

So... I got chickens.

I have him on ignore, so didn't see that comment until now. What's the snide about? I don't get it

Just checked you do not have me on ignore, why don't you try and grow a pair?

Jason, sorry to correct you but it was most and without a doubt, a snide remark.

This is one member that i truly find wanting. It is always ME, ME, ME when he posts, thats when he is not losing puppies.[/QUOTE

Have a nice day.

Well, color me wrong.

I can't complain. I have a couple members on ignore and wouldn't take them off if they were giving away winning lottery numbers, so there's that.

When I go to Haiti, my neighbor has a LOT of cocks. My gosh! When they all start crowing in the mornings it is 100 decibels. They chase the chickens all day. Then at night the donkeys bray all night long! Animal sounds are music to my ears.

One of my students (here in US) keeps chickens and gives me fresh eggs. Love them.

Don't they fight each other if there are more than one male around?

Almost anyone with a lot of roosters is keeping them for fighting.

Lately there has been a mother duck on my street, followed by three little ducklings. Last week there were four. The ducklings are the most vulnerable things in the world, and it's sad to see how quickly they get thinned out. Cars, dogs, cats, especially feral cats, opossums, raccoons, hawks, owls, etc., are all dangers to them.

We have a mama duck that comes to our backyard a couple of times every day, she has five duckings and they are growing fast. I get so happy when I see them.

I've always been taught that grown chickens, especially roosters, were tough and only good for boiling.

Capons come to mind.

Also, roosters are less desirable because they don't lay eggs.

I thought the farmers literally just kept a few to keep the hens interested in laying and to help defend the hens from foxes and ferrets and other smaller predators.

You're correct. Most people I've known use the roosters for soups and they only had extra roosters because they were incorrectly sexed when they were chicks.

I don't mean to impugn anyone without knowing, but many roosters usually means cockfighting, and it still happens too often in the US and abroad. Roosters would fight anyway, but I agree it is cruel to breed them for it.

I can stand the noise roosters make. But peacocks are another story. My Grandfather's brother used to raise them. They lived about 1/2 mile away from us and they still sounded like they were in our yard.

Yes, Haiti does fight cocks. The fights are popular and can get very [STRIKE]bloody[/STRIKE] messy! I don't approve but cock rings 😳 are everywhere and fighting is big money.

The cock ring is called a gauguerre which literally translates as nightmare
