So, what do you guys think about the possible mosque by ground zero

I'll put $20 on it that it will be built right there.

Wanna take me up on it?

it will be built. it may take years and the supreme court may have to make sure of it, but last I checked, there were no real legal barrs from doing so.

If the people who want to stop it want to sue in court, they would have to give a judge a good reason to issue a stay as they argue the point.

The only other remedies would be to resort to violence, and if the people against it become americans versions of the people that knocked down the twin towers, then they will be arrested and charged for their crimes.

BTW??? attempting to deprive someone of their civil rights, specifically the freedom to pray, is punishable under the law. Fox is dealing with a conspiracy and a huge fine if this thing gets only a shade more ugly.

I find it extremely ironic that you guys promote Islam. If the Islam faith had it way, you would all be beheaded because you are gay.

I am totally at a loss.

How can you live in Singapore Molten where it is illegal to be gay?

You're at a loss because you think by protecting the rights of people, we're "promoting" their religion.

You and Johann must share the same loss of logic in the face of the law; the Constitution. Which is probably why this thread is still going on. Which is why I think some of you are absolutely unlearned in the way things are supposed to work in this country.

I find that ironic. Or I would, but I do know what irony means and this isn't it.

Do you support the rebuilding of the Greek Orthodox Church then?

No one is supporting Islam, they are supporting the freedom of religion.

You cant get that and it startles me.

Sad that a nation can be built on a concept and you are so far removed as a republican that you don't get the foundation of america.

you are at a total loss at understanding america, its history, and why it has suceeded for so long.

Sure. But to bite on this since now instead of answering you're choosing to attempt to deflect, i'm sure there was a point to you throwing something up about a church when we're talking about the protest of something that isn't even a church?

Because i'd love to hear that excuse.

They have been trying to rebuild the Greek Orthodox Church for years but have run into roadblocks from the city and port authority. Google it and read for yourself

The discussion about building the mosque/center has never really been about the freedom of religion. I've heard no one ever say they shouldn't build the place because of the Islam faith -- the point has always been that it is insensitive considering the circumstances of 9/11.

If you're not aware of the struggles to rebuild the Greek Orthodox Church that was destroyed at ground zero -- please do yourself a favor and read about it.

these two posts make one completely dishonest.

You can't just change your story in mid stride

One minute you can't understand supporting islam and then the next you say its not about islam.

I could care less about islam. I care about our constitution and if you did, you would stop trying to make up lies that support your fears.

You honestly don't strike me as a man of hate or prejudice, and that leaves fear.

Why do you fear the application of the constitution when it has saved us again and again over all these years on these types of issues.

It makes the arguement moot and not about personalities, events, or popular sentiment.

THere are just some things that make us intrinsically better at things than other nations, and freedom of religion is one of those. if you fuck with it too much it will break. One day you may wind up being told by the state where and when YOU can pray.

sound like a world you want to live in?

I can tell you've never been there "Jack". Where pray tell do you live? Texas? Arizona? Alabama?

I still have yet encounter anyone threaten me, or scream from a passing car or as they were walking past "faggot" or any other homosexual slur. I've had that happen plenty in the US, although never in Minneapolis. Mainly in the south, go figure. Much less racist slurs like, "chink", "dog eater", or most amusingly "wet back". I wish rednecks could get their racial hate filled slurs from at least the correct continent. (Then again most haven't been more than 12 miles outside their trailer home's front door.)

Singapore has a thriving gay district (Tanjong Pagar) with gay shops, bars, saunas, gyms, etc... Like everywhere else in the world, the gays move into a run down area of town and turn it into a gentrified, reinvigorated, hip place to move and be in.

Is Singapore perfect, no. But for intents and purposes it's no different than any America major city. With the next generation of leadership in Singapore coming thru the ranks it will probably officially be open before America gets there. America is already bassakwards compared to 35 other countries who have leapfrogged it regarding gay rights and marriage. So save me your righteous indignation.

Thank you. I am not a hate filled person. I'm a very nice guy who is trying to understand why people would support people who want to destroy them.

I admit that there are certain "Christian" people or groups that want to do the same thing -- but they are a small group. Some Christian groups focus on small passages in the Bible and build their entire religion around it -- I suppose the same is true about Islam.

Right now I feel like we're being told we HAVE to be tolerate and accept whatever the Islam group wants to do in NYC. So we may be to you day when we are told what and where you are to pray.

I'd still like someone to respond to the Greek Orthodox Church building. It is relevant.

the greek orthodox church and the muslim cultural center BOTH have a right to exist, and more importantly, the gov't is not empowered to stop either one based on the faith of the people who own the site.

Its just the way it works. If the supreme court saw the case, they would HAVE to allow it. There is no wiggle room.

Once again, we are not supporting islam, we are supporting the freedom of religion that we hold dear as americans.

Relative to the hundreds of millions of muslims, those who want to destroy the west are about the same proportionately as the number of fundamentalist christians that want to bomb the shit out of Islamic countries and grind their religion under their heels.

Seriously.

So I would assume that you guys would also agree that the church in Florida has the right to burn the Koran - it's their freedom.

I guess they have the right however it's in poor taste just like building the mosque/center so close to ground zero. All you do is piss people off -- nothing good comes out of it.

The difference is that the Qur'an burning is INTENDED to cause offense. The building of the Cordoba House wasn't intended to cause offense, and it DIDN'T cause offense until the right-wing media decided to make an issue out of it.

sad that you are playing the republican game of I can go lower than you. I think you're winning.

Look.... book burning is dumb, no matter what the book, because the words they contain hold the power and you can no longer get rid of the words in our age. So its just an act of instigation. Horse shit is just horse shit, and if you have to bend logic so far backwards that it no longer makes sense then you look foolish.

Why is it alway some hick from alabama with a torch chasing frankensteins monster up the hill?

Cause their cousin is too fast for 'em to catch... :sex:

Since Muslims are not in the habit of giving korans to crazy Christians for book-burnings, I would like to know how they came by them! Deception? Theft? I think that should be investigated.

Dude, I think you need to spend some time with "regular" people who live in rural, middle America.

Not everyone is a hick, in fact some of the smartest and most insightful people I've ever known have limited formal education.

A PhD, Masters doesn't make you smart -- I'm sure you'd agree that Bush's MBA from Harvard didn't make him smart. LOL

What Republican game -- I just made, what I think, is a an accurate comparison.

I may have been a bit harsh to YOU, but burning books is backwater ignorance, not freedom of speech. Its intent is to silence the speech in the books being burnt.

that is censorship.

Well, don't take ME up on your bet...I'm thinking the same thing.

What's the big fuss? In New York City, two and a half blocks is actually a "long ways" away from Ground Zero. No, NYC blocks are not larger than anywhere else, but New Yorkers are very accustomed to neighborhoods that far apart being drastically different from one another, often enough to feel like a "different part of Manhattan." Most likely, this would be no exception.

Seriously.

Are you SURE about this rareboy? Something tells me the ratio of Christians who want to turn the entire Middle East (except, of course, Israel) into a massive sheet of green glass is FAR higher than the ratio of Muslims who want to destroy this fundamentalist Christian nation. (Let's face it, like it or not, this nation is plummeting into the sewer of fundamentalism VERY quickly, and those types seem to be reaping all the Power and Glory lately...we may be fucked well before February.)

One thing I really love about this site is that we get comments from Canadians and from people in other countries who are at least somewhat removed from the unadulterated bullshit, lies, and blatant propaganda spewed by so much of the mainstream media in the United States. the propaganda machine in the U.S. is far more healthy and robust than anything the Soviet Union ever had. And I find these non-U. S. replies often to be the most interesting and on target.

Actually, some of these fundamentalists would be perfectly happy to see Israel destroyed in the process as well.

So I would assume that you guys would also agree that the church in Florida has the right to burn the Koran - it's their freedom.

Don't even get me started on that idiot pastor. I'll bet ALMOST ANYTHING that he's given sermons which promote death to gays as well, and he probably goes home and beats and bruises his wife for burning the toast. What a total waste of perfectly good protoplasm!

Since Muslims are not in the habit of giving korans to crazy Christians for book-burnings, I would like to know how they came by them! Deception? Theft? I think that should be investigated.

They probably got the Qu'rans from the same place that Muslims get them: Amazon, Borders, thrift shops, etc. That church is no doubt totally rolling in the money, and can certainly afford to buy a couple hundred Qu'rans.

Did the pastor (and similar people) stop to think, even for as short as a New York nanopicosecond, that all the publicity will inevitably result in a surge in sales of Qu'rans, and yet more money/proceeds for the Muslims who are having them published? No, they didn't think of THAT. They're too simplistic and stupid to realize that fact.

in fact some of the smartest and most insightful people I've ever known have limited formal education.

A PhD, Masters doesn't AUTOMATICALLY make you smart

Last sentence corrected for truth, because sometimes the Ph. D. or Masters DOES make somebody smart, LOL.

But interesting observation, Jack - I've noticed the same thing my whole life. Schools NEVER teach things such as common sense, compassion, or life skills - a person who has a good sense of these is going to be much "smarter" on life issues than the person whose cranium is filled with zillions of facts, many of which he/she may never even use the rest of their lives.
