What do you think of Obama's comments on it?

How do you think it will affect NYC (meaning how will new yorkers react to it)? Will they embrace the mosque just a few blocks from Ground Zero or will they vandalize (right word?) it or worse, bother the people that attend it?
Will there be huge protests or will people just go along with it?

All this is considering if they are even building it.

I think it's all much ado about nothing. It's two blocks away from Ground Zero, so it's not like they're building it AT the WTC site. In NYC, two blocks can be a pretty significant distance.

Besides that, religious freedom is one of the fundamental principles upon which this country was founded. As long as the building is within code, there's no legal reason for the city to deny anyone the right to build a house of worship.

And, contrary to the fears that I've seen expressed, this mosque will hardly become an al-Quaeda training ground. The man who is trying to build it is an outspoken peace activist.

The opposition to this mosque is Islamophobia, pure and simple, and I consider that wholly unamerican.

I've been to ground zero and it's still very emotional. At first I thought maybe the Muslims could build there Mosque at a different location because it will cause so many problems. However, I think the Mosque will go up as planned and I am okay with that as the people attending it are not terrorists, just Muslims.

I can't remember where, so don't quote me or take my word for it, but I heard that if they do succeed in building their mosque at that site, they'd consider it a victory with 9/11.

I honestly don't understand how anyone could stand behind a god and a religion that has so much blood on its hands and has caused so much heartache and war.

Now try and guess which religion I'm talking about.

It was my understanding that the Mosque that is being built was meant to replace one that stood near the same spot.

Even if this was not the case, Obama’s comments were spot on.

This anti-Arab/Islamic trend among politicians that the general public is both disgusting and frightening.

It's like the anti-Japanese fervour from the early 40's, depicting -- not the Japanese Government or Military -- but all Japanese people as the "enemy." If you think people learn from their mistakes, you'd be mistaken.

Today politicians and citizens protest their right to religious buildings, but what happens tomorrow? Will their businesses be taken away while they are sent off to internment camps?

I find it hilarious. When the word god was proposed to be removed from the pledge and when a judge came under fire for having the commandments in his courtroom, so many Christians shit brix yelling about religious freedom. There's always people who feel their views must be legislated on those who disagree and here in the US, those folks tend to be Christian radicals who, unfortunately, create a negative stereotype for the rest.

Considering all the muslims in New York along with the fact there's already a few mosques near ground zero, and that you can't pride yourself on having religious freedom with this shit going on, everyone should just shut the hell up. This is no worse than the fact there's about a jillion halal carts circling the area already. [sarcasm]gee! oh no! it's as if they're agents in some covert conspiracy! [/sarcasm]

Damn, even some of my friends are in on this. "Islam was responsible for 9/11!" to which I responded "no, the people responsible for 9/11 were muslim. It's like blaming a bowl of nachos for people being fat. Like you could say "nachos made that guy fat" to which I'd reply "no but he ate nachos."

Actually it's a community center with a prayer room, rather than a full-fledged mosque. And the cite is an old Burlington Coat Factory building, not the site of a former mosque.

There was a mosque in the WTC. There's a mosque in the Pentagon. There are mosques everywhere, and that's as it should be, because that's America.

And I agree Obama was spot-on, and it's a pity he's been backpedaling.

But...don't nachos make you fat even if you don't eat them? I've always figured that as soon as I looked at them, I was doomed anyway, so I might as well eat them!

This seems like a touchy political topic that has the potential to spark some heated arguments. I wish there was a separate subforum where these threads could be posted, so as to not poison the environment of Hot Topics.

I don't see the fuss...

But then again America is the land of contradiction...Starting back in 1776, what with the all American are created equal, despite the fact that slavery existed in the country...

To an extent, I can't help but think that George Carlin was right. There's no such things as rights, just privileges. And some people are more privileged than others, and that's how debates like this get started.

Sure, some Muslims have done some horrible things in the name of their God. But so has pretty much every other religion that exists in an organized form...

If this were a 'Mega-Church' complete with 250 cameras, seating for 100,000+ and broadcast every Sunday soliciting donations, would people still have a problem with it? Of course not, they'd even likely be welcoming of it...

Bah, I've ranted enough; if America actually wants to be the land of freedom and equal opportunities, they actually have to implement their laws as written for all citizens, regardless of race or religion or whatever, and not just pick and choose the parts they like.

Seems like it would fit in religion and politics.

But honestly, I hope this can be a form of healing. I hope we can all realize that the issue isn't the Muslim faith, but zealots. Zealots of any religion, or just of any mindset, are very dangerous. The religion/belief system itself is not necessarily bad.

Lemon, I do think we all SHOULD give a fuck. As everyone is saying here, this is about rights that are supposed to be guaranteed by the constituion.
I'm also very glad to see a discussion of this here.

Last I knew we had freedom of religion in the United States, and a general respect for private property.

They bought the land, they're within zoning standards. I don't know why it's anyone else's business.

It's terrible. How incredibly insensitive. I'm boycotting it.

I hope you will also join me in boycotting the following Japanese Restaurants built near Pearl Harbour:
Gyotaku Japanese Restaurant
Kozo Sushi Pearlridge
Kunio Restaurant
Genki Sushi USA Inc

Sushi restaurants!?!? At Pearl Harbour? Totally inappropriate. Sushi should be called "freedom fish."

Definitely a "touchy" topic. However, the horrendous acts of 9/11 were strictly Political! Those taking part were, indeed, Muslim (in name only), and what they did had no relation to their "Faith", in spite of how they may have been indoctrinated! They were Terrorists, pure and simple. The "cause" they were, supposedly, fighting for had nothing to do with Islam! [-X

I think a mosque, even in the direct center of "ground zero", is one of the most appropriate things that could happen. And, I applaud those that wish to establish this community center/mosque, as a show of commitment, and continuity, with NYC, and the rest of our country! :=D:

And, I am proud of our President for standing up for what is Right! ..|

Keep smilin'!!(*8*)
Chaz ;)

Good god. Put that on a t-shirt and I'll buy TWO.
