Italy vs Paraguay

La albiroja take on reigning holders the Azzurri in the evening fixture in Green Point. I will be there :D wearing my retro France '98 Italy supporters' t-shirt in the pissing rain and howling wind, so they'd better fucking win. PAraguay are playing their 4th consecutive World Cup and have made the 2nd round twice in recent tournaments. They had a good qualifying run, finishing only 1 point off the lead and in third only by virtue of goal difference. Apart from Italy, though, their group F is comparatively "easy" with the numbers made up by New Zealand and Slovakia, countries whose football prowess is really in its infancy at present. Goals if any will probably come from in-form frontman Roque Santacruz.

Italy are a football powerhouse but have often been thwarted early on in tournaments and frequently seem to have a slow start. However, each squad member is top-class and playing in the top clubs in the top leagues in Europe, and the Italians are never not a handful. The current squad is a finely-balanced mix of youth and experience, with the ability to score goals coming from almost any player on the pitch explaining their 4 WC tournament wins.

Prediction: Italy 1-0 Paraguay

Guess I'll just have to record the match and watch it this evening.


I think the final score may be a little more in Italy's favor. I'll say Italy 3 - 1 Paraguay.

I knew the boss wouldn't let me spend most of the day in the break room watching World Cup, so I had to record the games, and just finished watching.


Italy looked like they could use another 2 weeks or so training together as a team... not quite ready for the big show.

Haven't got to watch Paraguay MNT play this time around, but I've read that they've done very well in qualifications, and it certainly showed tonight.

Congratulations to Paraguay for a match well played. :=D:

Can't wait to read blackbeltninja's first-hand, eye witness account. :D

I didn't mind the wet white shorts on italy though! (!)

(I normally really watch football/soccer for the game.. yesterday was an exception. It just wasn't too great of a match)
 
Lugus, I had one going off in my ear the whole of last night.

People in cars blowing them on the way to town. People walking to the stadium blowing them. People on the stadium shuttle buses we were blowing them. And then everyone blowing them throughout the game. And in the bus on the way back to the shuttle station.

It was cool. Truthfully, I find them distracting on tv but I didn't really notice them in the ground. You hear them, but it's not nearly as annoying as I thought it would be.

It was a good night but I froze my balls off. You guys understand the cold; we do not. If it gets to below 10 degrees centigrade - which is not that cold to you guys who live up north or in NZ or Oz, I know that - we Capetonians curl up into little balls and cry. So it was fucking freezing at 6 degrees and pissing with rain. It took me 20 minutes from home to the outskirts of town, 45 minutes from there to where I parked (usually 2 minutes during the day), twenty minutes' walk to the shuttle in the rain. The shuttle was very efficient - waited in line for maybe 10 minutes and we were off; 8 minutes to get to the Stadium, 10 minutes to get through security and ticket check and we were in.

My seat was behind the Paraguayan goal in the first half - so both goals were scored on the other side - in line with the corner flag on the left side of the keeper, 20 rows back. Not bad for the cheapest seats in the house, I don't think :D.

There were quite a few Paraguayan supporters. You can't really see them, but they're pretty much filling that block of seats down the touchline into the corner. You can see their banners on the railing above them with red/white/blue stripes. We also had quite a few in the block next to us.

Most of the support was Italian, though, from locals as well as actual Italians.

Unfortunately, a cell-phone camera doesn't really do it justice. Especially not, as I discovered, when you appear to have put an almighty scratch into the lens cover sometime in the preceding 36 hours :(.

I'm hoping for better weather for Friday's game - I have tickets to England's must-win matchup with Algeria - in which case we'll do the Fan Walk through town to the stadium - loads of stalls and on-street entertainment and a variety of different foods for sale (beats the overpriced stadium hot-dog, that's for sure!) should be a lot of fun if it's not 6 degrees out. Not only 6 degrees it was close to 6mm cold, if you guys follow me...

Still, well worth the effort. Not the most scintillating of games, with the Italians playing catenaccio as usual, but still a great night out. I actually should have thought about this a bit more and got myself a JUB shirt to wear, although you wouldn't have seen it under the many layers of clothing I had on.

Today's games:
Brazil should completely molest DPR. If it's less than 3-0 I will be surprised.

I suspect Slovakia will edge out New Zealand, but I'm only giving that 1-0.

Pick of the games is Cote d'Ivoire - Portugal. Tough to call, depending on a lot of factors, but I think I will go 2-1 to Portugal. The Ivory Coast are solid enough, but I think Portugal will have enough extra to take the game. I'd even wager it will be 2-0 at some point. Having said that, my predictions haven't exactly been spot-on... I'm actually hoping the Ivory Coast take it ..|.

Too bad the weather wasn't better for the match. Still, I'm sure it was pretty thrilling to be there. (I've been to Kansas City Wizards matches in the wind and rain and 47°F ~ 8°C temperatures. Had a good time anyway, even though we lost! :lol: )
