About the surprises and disappointments, the big European teams have been the only disappointments so far. But if you have a look at the statistics, no European side ever won a WC that was organized outside Europe...

Ghana missed some good opportunities in the second half, probably due to youth and being a little over-zealous. Not enough teamwork it seemed to me.

Australia did very well for being down a man. Missed a couple good opportunities also.

Wow upset after upset.

I missed the USA game yesterday in transit to the Eng-Alg game, which was a pretty woeful performance by the English. The only entertainment was watching the Algerian fans almost start a riot in the stands by managing to sneak in and then let off - in a crowded, 64000+ people stadium - some fireworks, and then get aggro against the multitude of police present for security. I kept trying to not think stereotypical thoughts about Arabs and explosives, but it was difficult...

Still, Ghana - can't believe they didn't win! Netherlands - all over Japan, but so was Spain over Switzerland. And England - wow, what a shocker. For those who can, I recommend sitting amongst the Barmy Army at an event - what a noisy and cheerful bunch of guys.

To be fair to both sets of fans, since Algerians occupied a tiny portion of the stadium and the English had at least half of it with their guys and the neutrals were mostly supporting them too, you could actually hear both groups chanting and singing over the vuvuzelas. Strong presence all around and full marks for effort.

I hope Cameroon take Denmark!
