Something that hasn't been raised in this discussion is the appearance of Untuckit, and similar trends to lower the tightness of dress attire for men.

The tennis shoes? They're still pretentious crap. If you're going to dress in sports attire, dress in sports attire. If you're going to dress, then don't pretend to be edgy with "radical" footwear that is simply inappropriate.

Women have always had some latitude in the work place (post-1950) to wear less binding clothes, but men have been held to tucked-in shirts and ties that choke, and jackets that limit arm movement.

There is a shift in business casual that is allowing non-sports clothing to be worn without the Victorian standards.

For those that don't hold to Business Casual, the men wear sports shirts a lot, especially golf shirts. But, there is a space in between dressed down and dressed up.
 
^ It's all because you can not go against all the production means that are set for a definite type of clothing, mass, cheap, one-size-fits-all sort of production, so instead of reinventing the male standard and making an industry obsolete overnight, they just let it rot with that "untuck", screw-it attitude.
All that founded on the fundamental principle of physically and economically screwing females being considered "[female] fashion", and "screw fashion" being considered male fashion.

On the other hand, the common man has been fond of adhering to social conventions that facilitate his upward mobility. So, the system is hardly unilaterially imposed from above.

Hm. If that "common man "adheres to", then it was not that man who imposed those convetions.

I find more interesting when "uncommon men" from above seemingly "adhere to" social convetions rising from below... because of interests germane to that upper social layer, mainly economic, like I pointed to above when referring to production costs. Because, actually, the common man, the man from the mass, belongs to all social layers.
The true "uncommon person" forms a class of their own.
 
My nurse at the clinic today was wearing black sweatpants, a printed tee shirt, a gray hoodie, and dingy running shoes. No name badge nor did she introduce herself.

I won't go to a grocery store in that sloppy attire.
 
Suitsupply, the Netherlands-based company that uses fabrics from the best Italian mills tailored in Holland, has beautifully made suits starting at $450. I have a navy blue suit from them that cost about $600 and my Budapest-born tailor who altered the sleeves and trousers for me (Suitsupply would have done the work for free, but I like giving him the business-- besides, I enjoy the Mitteleuropa feel of his shop and Beethoven can be heard coming from his inner sanctum.) told me the tailoring and finish were comparable to my $8,000 Battistoni navy blue suit.

Zelensky is dressed in military attire. He has a point to make, and he's wearing a costume to emphasize it. He started out an actor, after all.
 
we need to dial it back just a tad, it's getting a little too casual, i'm tired of seeing open-toed sandals and flip-flops in restaurants, also not crazy about tank tops in a grocery store, reaching over the produce sprinkling fleas, bed bugs and body hairs all over the grapes. that's trashy.
