Some People are Refusing to Wear Masks [SPLIT]

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2)

It seems like these people are getting even worse, not only refusing to wear masks, but now attacking people.

Store worker pepper sprays customer who allegedly got violent after refusing to wear mask

It is like there is some kind of mass collective insanity that is affecting people along with the virus or something. This has gotten to the point of pathological irrationality. It's just simple mask on your face for heaven’s sake. It helps everyone and it helps defeat the virus. I just don't get why people become so deranged about it.

If you've never seen the movie, "Contagion"- it's worth a watch because it foretells a lot of what we're seeing happen. I saw a recent interview with the director and he said that the one thing that the movie didn't anticipate was the illogical social behavior patterns. The movie gets the anti-science people right- with the anti-vaxxers and the people who put their hopes into homeopathic cures instead of proven therapies and it also predicts the looting and the hoarding of supplies that we saw back in March.

What it didn't anticipate was the anti-mask people and those who continue to gather in bars and recreation spots in spite of there being an epidemic. It also didn't anticipate that we would have so many populist incompetent politicians in charge.

This anti-mask crowd has been out there for a while. They are a minority but they are so violent and strident that they seem to be more common that they are. This is the same crowd who were howling over Obamacare with irrational arguments (remember "death panels"?). They're also the same crowd as the anti-vaxxers. They're also the same crowd as the anti-government militia crowd. They're also the same crowd who are attending charismatic and Pentecostal churches believing in faith-healing and end-times prophecies.

What we should be surprised at is how many of these people are tuning into Rush Limbaugh, Alex Jones and alt-right media outlets. These people who are showing up at protests over stay at home orders, masks and who are promoting Q-Anon conspiracies are networking through the internet. Their mental illness has been brewing for a while and the prospect of being confronted of a reality that they can't process is driving them to irrational and insane behaviors.

belamo, March 10 2020: the worst of this all will be the people... the people as it has always been, and will always be.

Just like you people still do not quite accept that some people are not "mentally sick", they live in their own different universe, like others live in their own, with that difference that they will NEVER accept ANYTHING that somehow assimilates to the rest of the people who live in a different universe. They need to preserve that illusion of living absolutely apart from people who are not like them just like they need air to breath... they will even stop breathing if they feel that destroys that universe that makes them what they are.
Seriously, calling them "sick people" is EXACTLY the same as calling homosexuals "sick people": being what you are does not alweays have to be something that you must acknowledge as pretty, and in perfect harmony with the rest of the world... take belamo for a further example. Ultimately, you need two sides in collision for there to be a clash.

/\ I believe the people he is talking about are people who lack empathy. People who are incapable of caring about others.

They indeed do suffer from mental illness. They are psychologically/emotionally under developed.

The people he is talking about are emotionally retarded to the extent of being a danger to themselves and to society.

Have you ever heard people say "we all are disabled people" when they want to show sympathy to people with some sort of physical handicap, by pointing out that we all have some sort of disability to some degree? Well, it's the same with mental development and shortcomings, and you do not need to be very rabidly and obviously selfish to LACK empathy which is different from SHOWING or, better said, APPEARING to show empathy.

People who do not know much about empathy or feelings, in general at least beyond their own itches would take blunt harsh words as sociopathic speech... that is why they would be so shocked to learn that someone who always appeared so nice and said no "bad" or wrong words had a sociopathic history to their backs. Most people using the term "sociopath" to brand someone are just like kids calling their elders "tyrants": they know everything about the world by how they are feeling, they are talking about nothing else but their being upset... and that self-centered egotism would make them be closer to the actual "tyrant" or even "sociopath".

It just happens all the time, and I am talking about what people do and, most importantly, DO NOT DO, no about what they have learnt to SAY to SHOW they are being empathic. By ignoring something or some people until it gets close to them , they are showing the same degree of lack of empathy they may be so quick to point on others: being less obvious or even guilessly clueless about something does not mean it is not there. So that one could say your comment is psychologically and emotionally naive and... simple.

In many respects....ideas and beliefs are similar to the actual viruses. In fact, we use the term 'Going Viral' a lot in the digital media age because of the rapidity that information spreads.

It is surprisingly easy to tap into people's fears and insecurities and to create mass hysteria based on mistruth. Religion has been doing it for millenia...there is something in the human psychology that embraces the irrational...like we are wired to find false meaning and causality even when the simplest and clearest facts are right before us. Perhaps this skepticism has been an essential part of our evolution and creativity.

This kind of mass manipulation has been effective before....we have seen it lead people into wars and to support genocides for centuries.

What is fascinating during this time is the actual awareness of the how the politicization of illness has created viewpoints and how effective one television network (FOX) and a handful of radio jocks have been in molding the opinions of the less educated by sowing mistrust and conflating opposition to wearing masks with patriotism and taking a stand for liberty in the US.

I can pretty quickly figure out when we go into a store these days who is listening to fringe right wing media and who is getting their information from mainstream sources. What is also emerging is how many people are actually out there functioning with some degree of neuroses and psychoses and have been triggered by physical changes in the public environment. What we see is that their fear can easily turn to anger when challenged....behaviours that they have often been able to restrain in public (although many of them may act out in private) are now unable to keep their emotions in check because of new rules for interacting with strangers. What has changed is that they are able to form a collective affinity with the guidance and encouragement of 'influencers' and 'leaders' who get air time. So these insane people, many of whom appear normal, are validating the worst behaviour of others. Presently in the US, this starts at the top...a toxic, narcissistic sociopath has tapped into the primal wellspring of Id...to use the Freudian explanation of the psyche, the same way that insane leaders have managed to again and again in history.

Yesterday, in the grocery store, there were a handful of shoppers who stood out...in large part because of their relative sameness. The refusal to wear a mask. In several instances, the need to tell someone that they refuse to wear a mask. Most were aging white males, with a deficiency in self-care and clearly frustrated in their environment. And I'll bet that every one of them had behavioural issues as young children and the kind of ongoing anger management issues noted above. And it only takes a few of these disruptors to get all the attention...which they are getting because now everyone is the cameraman, recording incidents and sending them 'viral' through social media. Which makes the rest of us think that this is a mass movement when in reality, by the numbers, it really isn't because the majority of us are governed by Ego and Superego and rationalize and control our behaviour.

Adamantine is a perfect word for these days.

It does not embrace it, not anymore that you "embrace" your heart or your brain.

You do not need an army of terrorists to wreak havoc, nor a Godzilla or an alien (human or extraterrestrial) invasion to destroy the world as you knew it.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2)

I wouldn't doubt that there are people who are acting this way who have some sort of mental illness, I mean with the amount of people acting this way and how they're reacting to world around them, that is a given. At the same time I honestly believe that a significant portion of these people are just straight up asshole, selfish mean spirited people. They don't like the World they know changing around them, they're petulant children who don't like being told what to do even as adults and they act out this way. They're emotionally stunted and with the Pandemic happening that shit gets dialed up to a higher degree.

The battle over masks is a weird phenomenon. Where normally a person would mask as a means of self-protection, with COVID-19 the mask protects the rest of the community from the person wearing the mask. The government message of "masks are not mandatory" and the actions of these pseudo-libertarians does send an unfortunate message of, "My self-serving refusal to wear a mask is more important than the survival of others in the community".

The other phenomenon that we're seeing is irrational thought patterns that aren't new either. It's a perverted type of groupthink that amplifies irrational thinking in a group of people. Examples exist all through history- for example, the mass hysteria that preceded the Salem witch trials. Even 50 years after the Warren Commission, there's still a significant group of people who believe that President Kennedy's assassination was the result of a larger conspiracy. We have a President in the White House who actively pushed stories that Barack Obama was a Muslim and he was born in Kenya.

What we're seeing now with the pandemic started much earlier with bizarre conspiracy theorists, End Time eschatology, New World Order groups and groups like QAnon. For example, QAnon has been pushing narratives that the US government ("the Deep State") is a plot to harm children and Donald Trump is the savior fighting to protect the children from the Deep State. The pandemic just got incorporated into this world of conspiracy theorists. The QAnon conspiracy theorists are now saying that the coronavirus pandemic is a media conspiracy that is designed to keep Donald Trump from being elected so that the Deep State can continue their child molestation ring.

Below are some excerpts from a public meeting in Palm Beach County, Florida. When you listen to the public commentary, it sounds like individual people saying irrational things. But, after you read some of the conspiracy theories from groups like QAnon or the ministers who are pushing End Time theories, you realize that this is a mass hysteria. Many of the speakers are using conspiracy theory phrases- notice how many of the speakers mention "God". Listen for words like "plandemic", "5G", "political", "pedophiles". Listen for phrases like "masks are killing people", "the devils laws", "human sex trafficking", "communist dictatorship". These are all buzzwords from the internet conspiracy theories that have been in circulation for a decade and the mask controversy has now been incorporated into those conspiracies.

Notice another theme running through all these instances of "mask hysteria"- the accusations that the person refusing to wear masks knows "the truth" and all the experts who are recommending or requiring masks don't know "the truth".

There's three points that Caroline Mimbs Nyce makes in her article about QAnon that has some relevance to what we're seeing with the anti-mask hysteria. These same points can be extended to the other conspiracy groups that are very visible in the anti-mask and anti-quarantine protests:
  1. It’s a real-time participatory conspiracy theory.
  2. It’s a mass rejection of reason and Enlightenment values.
  3. It’s not going anywhere. In QAnon, we are witnessing the birth of a new religion.

This sidebar set of posts will probably get moved over to CE&P since it's discussion more of what is happening in politics and it's a topic that is much larger than the pandemic.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2)

^I live in Palm Beach County, Florida, and I'd like to point out a few things. First, Palm Beach is a large urban county with about 1.6 million people, depending on what the final 2020 Census figure is. That is more people than live in some entire states. We have all types of people who live here, and we certainly have our share of nuts. What's the saying? Somebody shook the United States, and all the nuts fell down into Florida? But what I'd like to propose is that perhaps the reason those particular people were so loud and abusive, so irrational, and so nutty at that County Commission meeting is that THEY'RE NOT GETTING THEIR WAY! The voting bloc they represent is actually in the minority here. You notice that the commissioners didn't allow themselves to be bullied and intimidated by those people, but went ahead and did the right thing by voting to make mask-wearing in public mandatory. Now individual stores don't just have to take it upon themselves to enforce mask policies, they can just tell customers they have to wear masks because county law requires it.
